Hi just joined up, hope that someone might be able to help. I had a strip done 2.5 months ago (1500 fug in frontal section). I did suffer shockloss in the transplant area and they were transplanted hairs from my first hair transplant and also in the donor area below the scar. I have got new growth coming through but would this be the transplanted hair growing back from the first hair transplant that I lost through shockloss or could it be actual growth but as I said it has only been 2.5 months. The other Q is I did loose hair from the donor area under the scar. The scar is good (seems narrow) but red but underneath the scar near the curviture of my head it is smooth with no hair at all, will this grow back?
Would appreciate any replies, trying not to stress about it at the moment.

Hi there Aussiemick,

Welcome to this forum and you have some good questions. I'll try to help you the best I can.

Overall transplanted terminal hair does not shock-out as readily as natural diffused hair. Yet I do from time-to-time hear from patients like yourself who does experience terminal hair shock. And I also find it interesting that a higher percent of those individuals who experience terminal hair shock in the recipient area almost always have some shockloss in the donor area especially around the sutured area.

Did something go wrong? I highly doubt it. IMO some patients are simply more prone to shockloss than others because of how they "respond to the scalp trauma". I mean sometimes I just scratch my head when someone calls me or writes to me and states they had very little shockloss yet they had enough natural hair to shock-out and had 2,000 plus grafts done! Does that imply they went to a superior surgeon? Not necessarily. Even the most talented reputable hair transplant doctors have patients who have higher and lower than average shockloss experiences. So it's always better to be more safe than sorry. What I mean by that is whenever there is more natural and diffusing hair in the recipient area, doing smaller sessions is most often a safer approach because there are fewer recipient sites created. The fewer incisions, the less trauma generally speaking. But one thing patients can count on is the fact that shockloss CANNOT be predicted. So taking a more conservative approach as you did makes more sense yet you still sustained undesired shockloss. Please try and keep in mind that you did not do anything wrong and I truly hope you are not associating any blame towards your decision. Again it's all in how sensitive we respond to trauma. Also glad to hear your scar came out okay.

Don't worry. The bare area near the suture line will undoubtedly fill in and probably in the next two-to-three months, maybe sooner. As soon as the suture line heals, ask your surgeon about applying minoxidil to the shocked area and get his/her opinion about jump starting some new terminal hair growth in those areas.

Also, IMO your recipient area should be fine. Did you have much natural weaker hair left in that area or was it the existing terminal hair from your prior procedure(s)? What percent of it was terminal hair from your prior hair transplant?

Lastly, sit down, take a deep breath my friend and don't let yourself get any ulcers or anything over this because again I sincerely think you're going to turn out just fine. I also recommend that you have some pics taken and send them to your surgeon. You're also welcome to send them to me and I would provide you my honest opinion. Man, I wish you the best and before you'll know it the new hair will be coming! :D

Thanks jillinator, really appreciate your informative reply. In answer to your Qs, no nothing went wrong actually everthing went really well but I do seem to suffer from shockloss. It's just that after reading the posts on this forum I was a bit shocked to hear that alot don't loose their hair transplant hair whereas I have but I do have alot growing back in now but I am unsure if this is the hair transplant hair regrowing that I lost to shockloss or the new grafts growing but it has only been 2.5 months since the procedure so I am a bit confussed as to what is going on or whether to expect not much more growth or a whole lot more. I know this is probably hard to answer and wouldn't blame you if you didn't but would really appreciate hearing what you do think. I feel pretty confident that the hair around the scar will grow in just have to be patient. Thanks again for the reply and the reasssurance.

Aussiemick,

I just replied to your private message you sent to me. But I would like to answer you pubilcly on this one for the benefit of other readers. :)

IMO the new hair growing in is probably a combination of shocked hair and the new hair transplant growing in. It's still too early to tell. You will be able to evaluate better once more comes in with the apparent character of the new hair cylinders visually speaking. If they look strong and get fatter with length, you can bet your boots that's previous transplanted hair along with the new follicules. Some natural hair should come in although it may not be much if any. Those hair cylinders will look weaker in contrast to the new terminal hair coming through.

Personally I think you'll see more improvement over time and go to your follow-up appointments. If your Doctor is out of your area then send pics that are digital quality with good lighting. BTW, who was your doctor?

Thanks Gillenator, yeah most the hairs that are coming through a very dark with a bit of thickness to them. I have blonde hair and there are some very light color ones as well and they are much finer. My doctor was Constanine Hatzis from National Hair Institute in Melbourne Australia. I know from reading on some other forums that some people were not happy with the founder Dr Barry White but there were plenty of good results as well but Constantine seems to of done a good job so far. I have had some hair transplant's before but it is always hard to remember what happened as far as growing as it was so long ago and I never took pictures or documented the growing cycle but your help has been great and like everyone the waiting is the worst thing because you are never quite sure if it is going to turn out ok. My hairline looks like it is turing out ok as the hairs are coming through here and it looks staggered not it a straight line if i have explianed that ok.

Well hang in there my friend and keep us in the loop. I really want to know how things turn out for you in the coming months. Try to make all of your f/u appointments so you and your doctor can document your progress.

Hi Damien, I am from Bris and I had mine done by Dr Constantine Hatzis at National hair in Melbourne. Have seen your web site and was very interested as had about the same amount of grafts as you 1300. I am very happy with my results so far as it has now been just over 4 months and I have has some really good growth with my new hair starting to get some length and some density and really starting to fill in. My hairline also looks great. I will post some pics soon when I get time. I was very impressed with your results and so far comparing your results at this stage to mine I would say that I am on par with yours so I am very happy as I have said I think yours turn out fantastic. All the best mate.
