I am assuming you have had blood tests done, and your thyroid checked. If not, you should do that first. Assuming everything is good, you should consider trying Minoxidil or/and Spironolactone. Minoxidil can be used topically or orally. Here is an abstract of a study showing the results of females using Oral Minoxidil and Spironolactone: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29231239
You can see a dermatologist or hair loss restoration specialist to get a prescription or to ask for further advice.

Thanks very much for your reply. I might mention it to my GP as I can't see a dermatologist. I'm a little scared of spironolactone to be honest as I already have a reduced libido and get really bad pms but I guess it won't hurt to discuss it.

And yes had TSH checked it's perfectly normal, I have low end of normal ferritin but wasn't told this could cause thinning hair or anything. I've been taking an iron supplement most days just in case.

Low ferretin can definitely cause hair loss. One of the leading researchers in hair loss at the moment is Dr. Cotsarelis. He has stated that a deficiency in ferretin and iron can play a role in female hair loss. You should also take a high quality multivitamin as well.

Thanks I'll give a multivitamin a try.

Are you using minoxidil for woman? My sister also has this exact same problem and she is pretty worried over it as it started for her when she was 22 and now shes 25 and it progressively got worse .

Do you have any balding brothers or uncles? Are the hairs that are falling miniaturized? You said your testesterone was measured low but did your doctor check for DHT levels?

No I've never tried Minoxidil. I don't have any history of balding in my family and I'm not sure about DHT, we don't get copies of our blood tests as standard and I only know about the testosterone as I was asking about increased facial hair.

As for miniaturization, thats another thing I'm clueless about. I've tried googling it but can't tell if I have it.

In males if you experience pattern baldness does it affect your body hair too? I'm just completely at a loss for what to do or even how to get answers on whether this is an underlying condition or something like female pattern baldness.

To check for miniaturization look and see if the hairs you are shedding are thinner in diameter than your normal healthy hairs. Sometimes they get super thin to the point where you can barely see them, but I don't think for woman it gets to that point.

Male pattern baldness doesn't affect body hair but DHT is responsible for facial and body hair growth. DHT is also responsible for hairloss. So because of this people falsely assume that the more hairy your body is the more likely you are to go bald but differing people have different sensitivity to androgens so one person can go bald even with low DHT if their scalp is more sensitive to androgens. But obviously this is really unlikely if you have no family history of baldness as you say.

I suggest that you try using rogaine for woman if you are comfortable with it. See if you can visit an endocrinologist instead of a GP or a dermatologist and get a more thorough blood test including DHT levels and such. Most derms and GP are kind of clueless about androgenetic hair loss to be honest.

Thank you very much for that informative post. My hairs are mixed thickness to be honest. I was naturally blonde until about 2 years ago and my hair darkened quite significantly and my darker hairs become really thick and coarse but I still have fine blonde hairs too. Interestingly my arm hair and facial hair increased and my head hair and another place decreased. I also have acne that worsened 2 years ago and newly acquired facial hair and oilier skin than ever ! So the DHT thing could definitely be something to look into.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I will definitely see if I can see a professional.
