It was almost a year ago that I noticed the characteristic miniaturization of my frontal hairline. I'd been combing my hair back, gangsta-style for months previously and was amazed that in one haircut cycle my hair looked unacceptable to style that way anymore. BTW, I was 32 years old.
It seemed to come on so rapidly, I suspected at first that I must have had some kind of health problem as opposed to the effects being male pattern baldness. I came out here to gourmetstylewellness.com and pored over posts and basically came away with the advice to see a dermatologist. I did just that, and the labwork that he scheduled for me showed no hormonal reasons for the hair loss. So the derm got me on finasteride, and I've been taking it for 6 months. I did, however, mention to him that I'd gotten on the Soy Zone diet in January (a New Year's resolution) and had been drinking lots of soy milk for several months prior to my hair loss. He was intrigued and confessed some concern about ingesting lots of soy products but was unfamiliar with any supporting research.
With all the talk of equol lately, I was reminded of my own experience with loading up on soy. It may have been sheer coincidence, but from a broader perspective it got me wondering if sometimes male pattern baldness is triggered by something drastic that happens to our bodies, like becoming a fitness guru all of a sudden, or starting a radical new diet. This long-winded post is sort of a call out for anyone else who might substantiate a theory of hairloss being trauma-induced. Certainly when one looks at other disorders, particularly in the psychological realm (e.g. schizophrenia), there are many theorists who maintain that a biological disposition paired with a critical level of stress can induce the disorder. Anyone else suspect this may have been the case for you as well?
