Starting finasteride too early?

Background, 28yo male full head of hair no real signs of thinning or hair loss..

However my 2 younger brothers at 27 and 25 are both already showing signs of loss. The middle one at 27 showing a pretty bad receded hairline and thinning all over maybe a Norwood 4-5.

Father, every single uncle, and all grandparents have had hair loss at or around 20-30s.

My question is 2 fold,
1) would it be unwise to jump on finasteride as a precautionary measure WITHOUT any current hair loss? (I've done my research and have lurked forums for over a while when my brother started balding around 2yr ago)

2) would starting a finasteride regiment basically start a countdown of the years that finasteride would have theoretically been effective for me? For ex: if I start now vs starting at 35, would finasteride only work say 5 or so years for me(using arbitrary numbers) so I should ideally wait until I need it? Or is it's lack of effect over time not related to years of using the drug, and more so just age itself?

Appreciate the input

Hey I'm the same age as you. My dad is bald as hell. I've been using finesteride because 2 years ago my hair has been thinning. It worked at first but now its falling out again. I literally just came back from Seoul and met a hair transplant surgeon who told me I was too early on in the stages of hair loss to have the surgery. But he showed me a picture of his father who is completely bald. The surgeon himself had a full set of hair, however he explained that as a preventative measure due to hereditary traits, he has been using finesteride and other non invasive treatments as preventative measures. So I believe if a surgeon is taking preventative measures it is ok for you too. But you should caution on the dosage you use

IMO don't start anything until you see miniaturization/thinning.Use keto shampoo twice a week.If you do feel like any thinning just jump on finasteride then.Until then be cool and don't stress it.

I thin it actually really interesting, because essentially what you are right now is a ticking time bomb, though there is some uncertainty to it. I'd do it, means you don't have to loose your temples overnight and perhaps it will stop your hair ever getting attacked by dht. Hell it could work wonders for people with aggressive male pattern baldness

Hmmm, thanks for the input fellas. At this point I'm leaning towards asking my PCP for a finasteride/proscar rx next time I see him and maybe just taking it every other day. I know due to my family track record in both sides I'm probably screwed here, the question is when.

I don't really see any point in seeing a dermatoligist as I feel a lot of them are in the dark compared to some of the available knowledge you can acquire on your own. Any reason I should go to a derm? Can they really measure miniaturization or something?

Appreciate all the input

Pretty sure they can. Dermatologist can confirm if you got male pattern baldness or not I'm pretty sure.

If I were you, I wouldn't start any treatments until male pattern baldness is confirmed. It's always best to catch it early, but it's much better to not use propecia or minoxidil if you don't have to. If you haven't seen much recession or loss, then I would keep monitoring your hair every month or so. take pictures too. If you feel as if you are losing some hair, then post on this thread and plenty of helpful guys will be able to give you good advice on what to do. In the meantime, just keep watching your hair and hairline.

i need to see a picture of ur current hairline to let u know for sure

if ur 28 and ur hair line is super boxed and low on ur forehead like some people i doubt youll go bald, if u got a high forehead and no really square there is a good chance for some loss
