Stress or male pattern baldness?

Hello all :)

So I am a 19 year old university student and have over the last year or two been slowly losing hair on the top of my head. Initially I denied it, then I eventually got to the point where it could no longer be denied. At this point my mom took me to a dermatologist, and after about 30 seconds he told me it was stress related and would all be back in a year.
That was more than a year ago, and if anything it has gotten worse.
Ive got a space about as big as my palm on the top of my head which is, under light, essentially skin. There is still thin wispy hair there to touch (doesnt feel like touching bare skin), but visually it looks bald.
I've gotten to the point where I hope it is not to late to do something to correct this.
I had considered products like rogaine in the past, but it had always said it was for genetic hair loss, and I thought mine was stress related so I steered clear.
Im getting to the point where I am beyond caring and just want to get some hair back!
So I have come here hoping to find some advice :).
Cheers!

I dont seem to be able to upload a photo? The screen just goes to white and doesnt load.

My dad at 60 has more hair than me, same for my grandfather's on both sides of the family. One of my father's uncles is balding (in his 60s). Thats pretty much the only relatives I have who are.

My hairline is receding at the front, but not super dramatically

Yes! I have the same family situation as you! There's wasn't virtually any hairloss in my family, except for one of my father's uncles who had signs of balding. Everyone else have a good to great head of hair. I'm only 21 and I'm receding and thinning. I was at the dermatologist and he did a miniaturization test, and diagnosed me with Male Pattern Baldness, but it's hard to believe for me, looking at my family's hair history. I wonder if my hairloss could be for other reasons than genetics. Some kind of health problem, or maybe hormone imbalance. I was planning to go check my hormones. I must get my *** to it.

If you hair is thinning out all over or with totally random coin sized patches that are completly skin bald then it could be stress.

If your receeding in the temples or thinning in the crown or general vertex region then its m.p.b.

Stress related hairloss is extremley rare.
And IMO these days REAL stress is actually quite rare despite the huge rise in rise in diagnosis in the past few decades.

Every guy will m.p.b will go through the early stages where he blames it on Health and or stress.

Ah i see. Well I never really trusted that dermtologist anyway lol. 4 foot 9, a bow tie, and a very creepy grin.
So at this point, is it best to start using a course of rogaine?

Lol well I suppose I've moved beyond the stage of denial, I guess good ol' uncle steve gave me the balding gene.

So I uploaded some photos to my photobucket, dont know how to use tinyurl or anything. If you guys could have a look I'd appreciate it.
Is there any point in making an appointment with a GP to discuss this? Or should i just go to the chemist and buy some rogaine?

Not to steal your thread or anything, but here is where I am coming from.

I had thinner hair throughout my life. Around the age of 22-23 my hair loss started to kick in, at the same time and for the last 4 years I have been under alot of stress, plus anxiety and some depression, mostly the last 2years and I can definatly see it in my hair. My hair loss is now pretty far on its course, its pretty much a total loss all over the top, but mainly in the vertex, my hair line has not receded, if it has in the last 5+years its practically immeasurable. My fathers side of the family all have male pattern baldness, however theirs are all from a recession at the front and meets with some vertex balding; mines more vertex and thinning in the front, this maybe because my mothers side all have a full head of hair. I think I can make a good statement that stress and male pattern baldness go hand in hand, plus your general health. When my hair loss took a turn for the worst I was under alot of stress and so on, plus smoking and drinking did not help, they only thing that may have keep me from being totally bald on top is my healthy diet and being active all the time.

Like others have said, I think pretty much every guy who starts losing his hair wants to blame it on stress or nutrition...its a sort of denial I guess. I did the same thing. Stress related hair loss is prettttyyy rare and is usually caused by very traumatic/extreme conditions such as a terrible disease or some crazy incident. Also, from what i've seen, stress related hair loss doesnt occur in the male pattern baldness pattern..its patchy.

You look like you have pretty classic crown thinning. your hairline looks pretty strong from the one pic you posted though.

I would say someone like you, who still has a solid hair line and mostly loss in the crown and vertex, would do pretty well on Propecia (finasteride) as long as you dont get sides.

Just my 2 cents

Classic male pattern baldness, mostly crown loss. I'd say NW5 in 2 years.
BTW it's nothing to do with stress, you could have been chilling out on a tropical beach for the past 5 years and you'd still have that up top.

Exactly plenty of rich people living carefree lives still go bald.

It isnt to late to reverse this is it though?
Can it be reversed? Or at least halted? Or is NW5 my inevitable fate :(

Start the big 3 and you could halt and regrow some.

As you lost it young there's still a good chance the hairs can be revived. I could see you doing well on minoxidil and finasteride :)
