Stressed and wondering if I do in fact have male pattern baldness

Hello everyone. I wasn't sure where to go or where to post haha, but I figured I would just do it here.

My name is Lucas, and I am 22 years old and will soon be 23. Admittedly, I have been worrying about going bald for a while now and it's gotten to the point where it affects my daily life. I don't mean to sound like my life sucks or that I am looking for pity, but I tend to worry about things easily and this is definitely one instance where I have worried a heck of a lot.

Anyways, for the longest time I have been stressing about it, and I truly don't know if I am balding, if it's a mature hairline, if it's normal or if I actually do in fact have a problem and should seek some treatment. My dad is 59 years old and is pretty much fully bald, and on his side he has three brothers, two of which are very bald while my youngest uncle still has a decent amount of hair. His father also was bald.

On my mom's side it's better as my grandfather had a decent amount of hair and my uncle on that side still has pretty good hair.

So, that leaves me. I am the only child and based on genetic traits alone my hair line and style of hair very much resembles my mother, but as I know and have read I inherit genetics from both sides including the hair.

I have read, and read, and read constantly about maturing hairlines and thinning and tried comparing my hairline to others, but I still worry. I even have spoken to my doctor twice about the possibility of me going bald and on both instances she laughed and said I had nothing to worry about because my hair is thick (I do have thick hair) and she said that my hairline is fine, and that if and when something were to happen we could take care of it. for whatever reason that hasn't been enough and I still worry that my hairline is changing. I have also asked my close friends and they all say I am nuts.

When I shower, I lose decent amounts of hair but nothing too alarming. I even bought hair thickening shampoo but I dont know if that even works.

I decided to finally join and look for some insight and advice to help me, to best try and calm my nerves. I worry because clearly my father's side has hairloss and I really, really don't want to go bald early on in my life.

Any response would be terrific. thanks. Photo on 2014-12-01 at 9.34 PM.jpgPhoto on 2014-12-01 at 9.34 PM #2.jpg

Dude , your hairline is fine. And your doctor is right. You have really thick hair, and what looks to be a perfect hairline.

Yes but on the left side, if I look close up and in bright light I can see what looks to be finer hair compared to the middle of my hairline where the hair seems thicker.

Plus isn't my hairline developing into the M shape?

(I appreciate your response, by the way haha... I just look at the worst.)

So even with the family history and all that, you believe that for now I have nothing to worry about?

Even if it does recede a little on the sides?

Hi LucasCasaletto2,

If you're serious about what's going on, go see a dermatologist or trichologist and have them examine your hair and scalp. If there's actual shrinkage of the hair follicles, then it's male pattern baldness.

Hello there, and yes absolutely I am very serious.

I always just figured going to the regular Doctor's and having them check it out to determine if I needed to go was the first step, but I always considered a dermatologist.

Your hairline might be fine by now, but if you see miniaturization, then it's male pattern baldness. Go see a Hair Transplant doctor or a trichologist, because dermatologists don't know anything about male pattern baldness.
If it really is male pattern baldness, you have to at least try finasteride. There is a good chance you will get to keep your hair by just popping a pill.

Thanks.

Well I was going to check out a dermatologist first, but if you think that's not a good idea then I'll try and see what else I can do.

I have heard finasteride works fairly well. I am assuming it's prescribed though correct?

I went to a dermatologist, they said there is nothing wrong with my hair, right thing I did by not believing and seeing a hair transplant doctor who told the cold truth right away(which I actually knew myself - male pattern baldness).

Finasteride works well, but you got to observe your body, because you might get side effects. The only cases where you need to stop the drug immediately is when you see signs of gynecomastia or experience erectile dysfunction. If there are mild side effects they might dissappear after a month or so. Keep in mind though that (as everyone believes) majority of people do not get any side effects.

And yes, finasteride is prescribed, see a doctor and see what they say about you using finasteride. Good luck.

Interesting. I really appreciate the feedback.
Yes I have read about the side effects, hopefully if I ever do need it I won't experience any.

If thats true then there is no point in seeing a dermatologist. Thanks again.

Lucas, I'm only a year older than you and my hair is in considerably worse shape. I feel your pain, but your hair doesn't look that bad!
Keep a close monitor on your hair, though. The easiest way to tell is when your hair is completely wet. Take a picture of your head after a shower under a light. You'll easily spot any thinning that way.

It's really hard to tell from the pics you provided whether you have male pattern baldness or not.

Thank you for the kind response.

To be honest, the picture wasn't great so here is another. I personally think this looks like male pattern baldness to me.
