I am a 30 year old male and having this hair loss and dandruff problem from last 4 years. The peculiarity about the problem is that it is not persistent but occurs every once in a while. The first instance of hair loss 4 years ago was quite short lived and it went away as soon as I got rid of dandruff. I have very oily scalp and straight hair and never realized till I met a dermatologist that I do not need to apply oil at all and probably need to shampoo everyday. I followed his advice and had wonderful looking hair for the first time in my life. But soon after 2-3 months I had this sudden occurrence of severe dandruff and hair loss. It continued for about 3 months till I was able to get rid of dandruff again and the hair loss stopped soon after.

Now this cycle keeps happening every now and then and I start losing hair as soon as the dandruff level in my hair increases. I lose hair in typical male pattern baldness fashion. The hair loss is always more pronounced on the right side. A few things I want to know

1) What is a really effective solution to the dandruff problem? I have been trying all sorts of anti dandruff shampoos for past few months including Nizoral and others but to no avail. I tried vinegar earlier and it worked to a large extent but it does not seem to be working this time.

2) Is hair loss a direct consequence of dandruff? In my case it always accompanies the latter.

3) Should I return to applying oil in my hair as I did 4 years ago? The reason I ask this is I never lost hair when I was applying oil. (Although it made my hair greasy and unmanageable and made me look pathetic).

4) Are there any adverse effects of shampooing daily? I use a very mild anti dandruff shampoo daily. I had once tried switching to a protein shampoo with conditioner but I started losing hair due to dandruff soon and I had to switch back to my regular shampoo.

5) I had shaved my head 2 and a half years ago (after being frustrated by hair loss and dandruff) and the hair which came our after that were thicker and coarser. Although they never actually had the same gloss and shine as I had earlier. Is this a result of using a shampoo daily or is it due to shaving.

6) Recently a dermatologist suggested me Finpecia and Minoxidril but I am apprehensive about taking anything orally since I have heard that it can affect one’s libido adversely. Are my fears justified?

7) Presently I am having such severe hair loss that I can’t some up courage to comb my hair even after drying them. Does not combing the hair worsen the dandruff?

Please answer as many questions as you can? I am desperately in need of help.

Are you actually suffering from male pattern baldness? It sounds like you keep having this cycle which is being repeated. Dandruff and Hairloss. Dandruff is cured and so is hair loss.

A derm would surely give you the correct diagnosis. It could be a fungus that is causing you these problems. A derm would confirm this.

As I said I lose hair whenever I have dandruff and the hair loss is in a typical male pattern baldness style. I never lose hair when my hair are free of dandruff.

Dermatologist suggested a antifungal solution called diprovate but that does not seem to be wroking. I am using Nizoral 1%.

thyroid is another problem with me

the complication is that I was recently diagonsed with Hypothyroidsm ( about 4 months ago) and I am thinking that my hiar becoming dry and coarse and heavy dandruff etc. might be due to that. But I am not sure since my T3 and TSH levels have been restored to normal from the last few months. I did not experirice hair loss when I was showing other signs of hypothyrodism but why am I losing hair now after my hormone levels are back to normal
