Success with minoxidil

I started minoxidil 5% twice a day feb 2003 (had started avodart dec 12, 2002, proscar aug 1998 to Dec 11, 2002). I had great sucess by may 2003 in thickening up my entire head of hair from the existing hailine back. No movement of the lost hairline. Well I was an idiot and stopped using minoxidil around august last year. I think I wanted to believe that all the gains came from avodart. Well by feb this year my hair looked much thinner again. I needed to get back on minoxidil. Last time I really noticed visible results by month 3 with minoxidil. This time I tried Dr. Lees 15% at night and 5% during the day and I think I am seeing equivalent results in two months. In 2003 my hair continued to get even thicker from months 3-6 and then stopped but the change was amazing. I feel I have the same results in 2/3 the time when using the 15% at night. I can only hope I will continue to see the same rate of improvement and maybe take the results further this time.

Anyway that's my story. Minoxidil is the bomb. I would say that now that I can reflect on my experiences that avodart did not do much more for my results than proscar. Adding minoxidil took the results to the next level. Still on avodart .5mg daily and I have never had any side effects.

Did you have any major sheds at the beginnings of your minoxidil usages?

Yes, both times. The first 30 days my hair getts thinner. It is always the thinnign hairs though that seem to be lossed. I belive they come back thicker and they are jump started into a new growth phase.

Agreed, minoxidil is indeed the bomb.

I's said it before, I was on finasteride for over 3 years on its own and my hair, esp. in front, became terminally thin during this time.

minoxidil kicked *** royale for me in no time! I also think my hair got slightly thinner in the first month, but by month 2 I could see it was working. Since 2-3 months on minoxidil my hair has been the best it's been it 5 years or more, results still good at 15 months on.

I also gotta give much props to Dr.Lee's minoxidil solution. No way could I use rogaine/generic with the flakes and itching they give me in the past. Not to mention their slow *** drying!

Hey Scott, are you on finasteride as well? Has anyone achieved thickening of hair with minoxidil only?

i have been using minoxidil 5% for almost a year now and proscar 1mg for nine months... at the beginning I got a pretty good result as my hair almost grew back to where i was... then after 9 months, i stopped taking proscar as I thought that wasnt' really necessary.... however, starting about two months ago, my hair started losing again slowly, but now it has become quite noticable... then I started taking proscar again two weeks ago..but seems it hasn't stopped my shed.....

two things i am wondering:
1) I heard and read somewhere that after using minoxidil for a year, the effectiveness will become less.... then have to stop for a while, and re-apply again... (that means I have to go through all those massive shed again   ) is that true? can someone pls clarify?

2) is proscar a life time committment thing to do? one side effect its bugging me was when i took proscar, i became very chabby... then when i stopped, i became so much thinner.... now only 2 weeks of using proscar, i can tell i am getting chabby again... will i still be able to gain back my hair???

I was on proscar 1.25 mg from 1998 until Dec 11, 2002, since then running avodart .5mg daily. I think the difference in the two is small in my case.

Some people that are sensitive to slight estrogen increases could see some water weight gain. Finasteride raises test levels which makes a little more convert to estrogen. Not really anything to worry about for the avg person but if you are semsitive then you have to look out for it if it is so bad that you get bloated looking or gyno symtoms which are very rare.

sorry my spelling is bad....I mean Chubby... fat... yea... that's the only thing i notice after using proscar...

however, can anyone my question on mino 5%? is there like an effective period... ? once it passes the period, it will become less effective? do I have to stop using mino 5% for like 2 weeks then re-apply it again..? please confirm!!!

thanks in advance!!

Hi all,

since the last time i posted this topic, no one has answered with further comment....hmm...may be the question was too stupid...

But i really want to know whether it is possible to stop using minoxidil for a while then reapply it again in order to gain back the effectiveness... I have read from a lot of previous threads that people after using mino for a long period stopped, their hair started losing again, but when they reapplied again, their hair grew back to the original stage.. so... just a crazy thought that since the mino effectiveness on myself has been decreasing, wondering if i should stop applying mino for a month or so, then reapply it so as to let my hair grow back to where it was.....

Welcome to any comment... even though you think my idea is stupid.... anyway just a thought.... :p

its very hard to say for sure that if you stop using minoxidil and restart using that if will start working again
i know that it has worked for some people, but they stopped using it for reasons other then it stop working

no one here can say for sure, but i think its worth a try
so may take a break from minoxidil for 2-3 months then restart
hope it works for you
