Sudden, Rapid Shedding And Thinning At Crown

I'll try to be brief, but informative here. I'm a brand new member. I am 25, and noticed recession around age 20, with miniaturization at the temples. Nothing crazy. I finally got a derm to agree to give me finasteride, and all shedding and recesssion stopped completely. My hairline is the same now as it was 3 years ago when I started finasteride. I recently moved across the country and took a new job. Since then, (about 8 months ago) I started shedding hair rapidly. I have bouts of anxiety, and my prostate has given me major issues, which my doctor told me was stress related. I have a whorl pattern crown, and though the shedding has been from all over, I noticed very bad thinning in my crown compared to just 6 months ago. I've had friends make jokes, and recently shaved my hair down to almost nothing to help hide it. When it's longer and wet or greasy, it is very noticeable. Anyone have similar issues? I look fine with very short hair, and have no problem eventually just shaving my head when I'm older, but this seemed very strange to me. I've been under a ton of stress, and it went from nothing to clumps of hair in the shower. Have been using rogaine foam on my temples for a couple years, but just started on my crown. Any input appreciated. Thanks guys.

okay, compared to the rest of your hair there seems to be SOME thinning in the crown, but nowhere near levels that its even visible to norwood spotters, i dont know what kind of friends that you have but there's no way you can spot any loss in the crown from the pictures posted if you are not mental. Also your temples are more hairy than my balls.

About the crown, if you cut your hair short with that hair type because the hair is more pointy it creates the illusion of great diffusion, if you let it grow out just a tiny bit more it wont be even visible to your crazy friends.

due to stress you might be suffering telogen effluvium but since you are on fina already there's nothing more than you can do, your other options are maybe RU/minoxidil/dermaroll/some topical estrogen maybe?

I appreciate the response. Believe it or not, when it's grown out, it's much darker and more dense in all areas besides the crown. When I wake up and it's greasy, it's very visible in the crown, esp under any kind of light or flash. I was sitting on the couch and my roommate touched my crown and said something about it. I have thick skin, but I certainly took note, and realized it's not just me. I know everyone wants to believe theirs isn't male pattern baldness, but why would it stop completely with finasteride, then start shedding rapidly. I'm talking when I shampoo, I can grab any part of my hair and get several strands. I've also had very itchy scalp and dandruff, which is not something I've ever really dealt with.

Well if you got male pattern baldness and you are on fina for 5 years? It could be natutal progression because fina loses eficacy over time, remember fina blocks 60-70% of dht which means you still have some amount "damaging" your follicles. You can switch to dutasteride which im pretty sure will fill the crown like an amazon rainforest but for me its not worth to take such risks.

You are also 25 dont expect to maintain the density you had when you were 15 be happy with what you have and stay calm because you are already combating it. To me your hair looks great.

Well I've been on the finasteride maybe 2.5-3 years. The first Doctor said no way, you'll get sides, yours isn't bad, etc. I have had no sides at all. My uncles on my dads side experienced balding in their late 30's. My dad has all of his hair at 52. Dark and zero recession. Their dad is prob a NW5 at 75. Moms side my grandpa has all of
His hair at 76. It just seems way early to me for this to be regular male pattern baldness, given the other men in my family's patterns. What are RU and dermaroll?

Don't see any sign of hair loss. Your crown looks that way just because of your hair being short and your density being average. Your hair caliber seems average too. Your dad is very lucky to have no hair loss at 52. Do you look alot like your dad?

I guess I should have posted pics of it much longer. I got so frustrated yesterday that I shaved it all off, and it doesn't show as much. Both a guy and a girl friend of mine have made comments, so I know it's not just me. I will upload some later when it's longer and/or wet. Yes, he and I are pretty identical. He has slightly different hair in terms of thickness. Mine even when cut short, you can't see the scalp as much, which is why the crown looks worse when it's longer. His isn't quite as dense, but he has zero thinning or receding. Funny how genetics work. I figured between him and my moms dad having zero hair loss, I'd be set for life ha.

mine was not so severe - the hair loss haven't reach to crown stage.
What I do is to buy a good shampoo - avoid those 2in1 with conditional coz it wlil lead to hair loss due to oily scalp.
Im using those hair fall shampoo and can feel the "mint' on my scalp.

I also go for hair treatment - as preventive measure + to maintain my hair condition.
The one i went to is radium medical at suntec. http://radium-aesthetics.com/program/restoration-hair-loss-treatment/

Rem, always keep you scalp clean and non-oily. =)

What's your aversion to finasteride? I've been on it over two years, and no sides. The studies I've read show that even people on the placebo pill have reported sides, which further proves it's probably nothing at all, or something else in their life causing those. All meds have a risk...I was willing to risk the 1% chance of sides personally.

yes i see you have really nice result, but why some people called on finasteride chemical castration..why that?,effects on hair are really good, but what about long term treatment 5-10y and above on finasteride for saving my hair before i hit 30y?

Hey guys, figured I’d post an update on here in case anyone else has similar problems. It was definitely Telogen Effluvium. My shedding stopped pretty suddenly around February, and the crown seems to be filled back in to where it was. My stress at work has tapered off, so likely due to that and the fact that shedding only lasts so long with this particular condition. Still taking finasteride mostly every day and using rogaine foam. Hope this helps. Thanks for all the replies, gents.
