Unfortunately, the Back to Basics shampoo that the previous poster linked to does have SLS in it. I just picked it up at the store and was disappointed in that fact.

I've heard mixed reports about sulfate. When I was working in a stressful kitchen I always washed my hair each night with cheap Garnier shampoo which had sulfate in it. When I read about sulfate I stopped using it completely and bought a sulfate free shampoo (and at the same time I quit the kitchen job and went back to uni). Over the next 6 months my hairloss excelerated. Looking back now I think it was because sulfate-free shampoos do not do as good a job cleaning the scalp. I was so scared of loosing more hair that I neglected to wash it properly nor as regularly.

Since starting a regime I used a shampoo that had sulfate in it and meanwhile had amazing regrowth with my regime. I now use Head and Shoulders daily and Nizoral twice a week.

IMHO you can use shampoo with sulfate, just don't over use it, wash it out thoroughly when you do, and use quality shampoos that others here recommend.

thats very strange, ive read a report where a study has shown that people who stop using sls shampoos experience less hair fallout and some regrowth as SLS can damage your hair and make it very brittle causing fallout. So im going to try my luck with some sulfate free shampoos ive found. Only cost 4pounds aswell :)

Im not sure if this was the site i read about it because i was just researching on google. But this site has a little bit about SLS, I'll try and find some of the other stuff i came across when i get a bit of time again.

University clinical trials in Scotland have shown that there could be a strong link between Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and hair loss. Groups of men suffering with pattern hair loss were split into three, with one group given conventional shampoo containing SLS, another a shampoo with no sodium lauryl sulfate. Over the course of 3 months the groups were analysed. Those that had been using the SLS shampoo saw little change, for those using the SLS free shampoo 56 out of 100 saw hair regrowth, a remarkable corroboration. Continued studies indicate that male pattern hair loss could well be linked to SLS and simply stopping the use of SLS based shampoo's can reverse the hair loss.

I don't believe in every case of male pattern baldness it SLS will be the culprit, but im sure that it probably does not help with certain hair types or people on strong regimes. The company behind the lasercomb advise their users to use the comb with sulfate free products. So hey, the SLS free shampoos hardly cost anything....so give it a try?

yea, that's no study...That's someone's opinion who is trying to sell you SLS free shampoos. Big difference

There's a ton of sites like this. The truth is there is such a small amount of SLS in shampoo that it's nothing to worry about unless maybe you're alergic to it. Seriously, this has been debated and many times and there is no evidence that SLS in the amounts found in shampoo and toothpaste are harmful. Still if you're looking for SLS free shampoos try "Jason Natural Cosmetics". They can be found at http://www.vitaminshoppe.com

So what's the best overall sulfate free shampoo out there?

I have been using Loreal sulfate free for color treated hair. The line is pretty good and very inexpensive, you can also get it at pretty much any super market or drug store for like $6.00 . I use the shampoo and the conditioner. Make sure you get the kind for color treated hair it's in like a pink, reddish tube, it says for color treated hair on it.
