I'm finally going to take the plunge. I've got an appointment next weekend with a well known pharmacist with the aim of going on finasteride. Hair loss has been an unhealthy obsession for me and I'm sure most people here can relate to that. Years of worry, insecurity, depression and lack of confidence all caused by this and I'm just surprised and a bit annoyed that I've put up with it for so long.
Right now it feels like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Even if this doesn't do anything for my hair loss, just the fact that I'm doing something is a burden off my mind. My only dilemma now is whether to add Min straight away or maybe see what happens with finasteride and nizoral for a few months first. The reason is because I know Min doesn't work for everyone so if I get positive results on finasteride and Min I'd have no of way of knowing if it was the two combined or just the finasteride its own.

Just use finasteride and nizoral by itself for a year. Best of luck.

I would say if you are young and still have a good head of hair just start off with finasteride. Congrats on finally doing "something". At least years from now you will not have to ask yourself "what if".

Thanks, that's pretty much what I was thinking of doing for at least 6 months.

Ha ha, well it depends what you mean by young (I'm 36) and I'm about a Norwood 2 to 2.5 so I guess I still have a fairly good head of hair compared to some people anyway.

Ok so I spoke to the "hair expert" in the pharmacy today. It went pretty much as expected; we had a little chat about sides, expectations ect and filled out a consent form. A couple of things surprised me though. Firstly, he seemed to think there was a decent chance of not only maintenance but even some regrowth. I thought finasteride without Min didn't give you much chance of regrowth. Also he thought I was about a Norwood 3 or 3A which was a little disappointing because I thought I was a 2 or 2.5 at most (Apparently I was at the perfect stage to go on finasteride). However, he did say it "didn't look that bad" though and I wasn't noticeably balding unless I pulled my hair back. Anyway I got my finasteride - £98 for 3 months which I think is relatively cheap and I didn't even need a prescription from the doctor. All I have to do is go back to the pharmacy every few months and they'll monitor me progress and sell me some more finasteride.

Congrats ! I'm in the exact same boat. Norwood 3 but can hide the bad recession with styling it. When I realized I was 3 i got so worried. Thought I was 2-2.5 for sure.

If you are looking for maintenance then just finasteride and nizoral. If your loss is recent the finasteride may give you some regrowth
if you're looking for regrowth then your chances are higher with adding min into the mix

good luck

98 pounds for 3 months? Did you get the 5mg generic (proscar, finasta etc)? 30 pills divided into 4 equal parts=120 which is 4 months give or take. In Australia I pay $50 for that. You are paying the Australian equivalent of 200 dollars for 3 months. You getting ripped off son.

Yeah, it just makes me more glad that didn't leve it any longer before I did anything! Like I said I'd be ok with maintenance but as a NW3 I'd love some regrowth or thickening. How about you?

No mate they only do the 1mg stuff. It's not the most expensive finasteride but yeah I know I could probably get it cheaper. The thing is I was getting desperate because my useless doctor wouldn't prescribe me it and I'm wary of ordering it of the internet. This was currently the best option for me, it's convenient as I don't need a prescription and I only have to pop down to my local pharmacy every few months to pick up my finasteride. Also, I think part of the price is for the service because they monitor your progress when you go back and give you any advice you need about sides ect. Overall I'm happy.

I've heard statements claiming something like within 2 years. I believe there's an article in the resource library on this site that covers the topic at least briefly.

I'm trying to get a prescription for finasteride too. My previous doctor was too conservative and a couple years ago a few dermatologists told me I'm too young (18) to lose hair. 21 now and I think I should start treatment.
