4 months on minoxidil and 3 or so ish on finasteride. With nizoral 2% thrown in a couple days a week.

90% of loss is in hairline/temples. 10% is a slight thinning of the crown.

Right temple has only receded slightly in what I would call a 'mature hairline' fashion. This temple is in fine shape, but I applied minoxidil at the temple anyway to see if it could grow back my hairline like I was 13 again. No dice, really. I see little regrowth on this temple.

Left temple looks like someone took a bite of hair out of the edge. After 1.5 months of minoxidil application I saw small hairs growing in. They continued to grow to about a centimeter, fall out, and start over for the next couple months. As of today, some of them are reaching much longer lengths and are almost of cosmetic benefit. More have grown in, and with every new cycle splashed in minoxidil, they grow thicker, darker, and longer. At this rate, I expect in another 3 months to have some full length terminal hairs in what was once a balding, whispy hair area. So basically 6 or 7 months to see real, helpful results from minoxidil with hair that is about 2 inches long.

My thoughts on the regimen:
minoxidil - the workhorse. I would say this is responsible for the regrowth in my left temple. I say this because you can see the stronger hairs growing in right where I apply it and not anywhere else.

finasteride - I'm still not entirely convinced the stuff I have is legit. It's from India and comes in the form of very small white tablets (anyone have finasteride like this?) I did get some testicular pain in the first 4 days of taking it, which leads me to believe it is the stuff though. Assuming it is, I think its helping me maintain what I have and maybe had the effect of thinkening up my crown a bit, maybe.

nizoral - not sure if this does sh*t. But whatever.

Side effects:
Bit of the aforementioned testicular pain for a few days upon starting, gone.

No change in libido, weight gain/loss, strength (I do workout). No gyno, never had scalp itch, no increased heart rate, no dandruff, no redness or swelling from minoxidil, nothing.

The minoxidil does leave a white residue when completely dry, its not dandruff though and washes right off when I shower.

Thoughts:

About 2 months into minoxidil application I noticed the thinning actually moved a bit farther back and looked worse. I chalk this up to the minoxidil induced shedding of these hairs. Rode it out and I'm positive I made the right decision.

Oh and I also take a multivitamin with 100% DV of zinc, and omega 3 fish oil supplements. I don't think either of these do anything for hairloss, but are really good for overall health.

Here is another positive update:

Under 4 months in and what a difference finasteride + minoxidil 2% + nizoral has made to my hair.

background:
I was just trying to stop the progression of a receding hairline at about a norwood 2 with no real diffuse thinning except for couple of penny sized diffused patches on the back head where my hair cowlicks converge. I might have just been having a mature hairline(I look similiar to my dad at my age, who lost his temples in his early-mid 20s and didn't lose anything else until early 50s where it all goes). But what harm would it do to having some security in prevent/slowing any worse hairloss for seven years? Yes... some money, but I'd promised myself to keep monthly costs below $25 a month for anything that showed results or I would abandon it. Most of my bills are higher then that now so why not give it a shot?

Results:
My hair has really thickened up entirely on the top of my head, it isn't quite as thick as it was when I was 16, but I'd say it is slightly thicker then when I was 19 which was about 2 years before actual recession started. I'd say what I have left on the top of my head is slightly thicker then what many people have at my age(24).

No real regrowth in the temples other then behind my hairline. However, the peach fuzz that at the start of the regimen which completely covered the areas I have lost hair, has now turned into bigger terminal hairs right to even where my original hairline used to be. I'm crossing my fingers that the hairs will have more cycles where they get bigger. But I don't want to get my hopes up for expecting to have amazing regrowth results and end disappointed with nothing. I'm already pretty happy with where I am now. If I style my hair these days, very few people would ever think I have hairloss.

Both my parents have commented that my hair looks great over the last couple of months. I never asked them how my hair was doing but I told them that day I was going on hairloss drugs. My dad the other day says my hair looks "good, really good" and I think even he is considering going on propecia because his hairloss has continued rapidly in the last year.

Side effects:
For the first couple months I'd have cycles where one week I'd be super horny trying to screw everyting in site, the next week little interest in sex and erections about 80%. Half way into the third month it stablized and I'm exactly the same where I was before I started taking finasteride.

A bad side effect I've had develop in the last week is that I have been compulsively running my hand through my hair. My hair just feels so much thicker and healthier when I run my hand through it and I can't get myself to stop admiring it.

Outlook:
Certainly pleased with the results and I have a feeling things will continue to get better since I am only just under 4 months in. I've also noticed my hair is much thicker at the bottom when I I feel it with my hand. Another haircut and my hair might look even better then it does now.

I've considered a FUE transplant to finish off my temples and go back to having the look of a full head of hair again. But I would only consider this after a year and half on the drugs where I had no further hairloss in the hairline and no developed side effects in that span of time. However, if I regain about 50% of what I lost in the last year in my temples I would not consider that option since that was my original goal. The thickened hair has really been a big bonus.

I'll post pictures and an update in the stories forum at month 6.

Yea, i'm with you on wondering how that minoxidil regrowth works out. You know its funny, alot of people on this website have tons of personal experience with the pattern of regrowth but when i posted a thread asking about it, noone really answered the question.

my take on the end results might be overly optimisitc because of all this hair that has started growing in, maybe it won't ever actually grow to length. The reason I say this is because hair is supposed to grow at 1cm a month. Well at 4 months on minoxidil these hairs are definitely not 4 cm. Alot of them keep falling out prematurely and starting over. I'm really really hoping they eventually will grow out all the way.
