Those of us on finasteride, can we still have children?

I probably should have researched this/asked around before i started Propecia, but those of us on the 1mg, are we able to have children in the future?

While you are taking this medicine you should use a condom during sex if your sexual partner is pregnant or could become pregnant. This is because the active ingredient of this medicine passes into semen, and could harm the development of an unborn child.

So if that is the case, what if we were to stop taking finasteride, wait for a certain time to pass, then attempt to impregnate..would there be any risks of a disabled/retarded child?

It's saying basically that it's bad for a lil developing child to have Finasteride or something knocking around, as it will inhibit THEIR 5ar, and they will turn out looking like a very feminine guy, or a really HOT girl O.O

As for infertility after finasteride... I really don't know it depends on the person and I would imagine it is pretty rare. Best way to check is to come off it for a while and see if your semen (I hate talking about this stuff on forums lol) returns back to normal. I'm not sure how long this should take though, possibly a few weeks =\

I am 6 years on finasteride (4 years on Propecia and 2 years on Fincar). 3 years ago I had my first my son. And by the way I am 37 years old now. So nothing to worry about.

Well I think that pretty much clears that up!

I think you need to watch sides and be careful (as it does differ person to person), but it seems that finasteride doesn't have to leave you sterile!! heh

Oh erm, yes I wouldn't personally recommend conceiving a child whilst taking finasteride, but then I don't know for certain.

How long does Finasteride take to be out of your system then? As one day of course I might want kids too so I think the best idea might be to come off it first for a bit... how long does it take to wear off?

I think Risugo is right it probably is ok but it really depends how quickly finasteride disappears from your system. We need to be careful

@Hoppi, i guess when the time comes you could see a doctor or specialist of sorts, and have yourself examined to see whether it's ok to go ahead with children (?)

If finasteride made you steril do you guys honestly think it would be allowed for hair loss? Show a study or a story from a reputable news source that says it's a worry, finasteride has been around for a very long tine now.

Well, if merck was able to get a product on the market which was life-threatening, I don't see why this would be a problem.

What does that have to do with what I said? The side effects of one drug has nothing to do with the other. finasteride has been out a long time...I'm pretty sure we have seen all the sides by now

Cassin is right, medical companies fall over themselves to pull drugs from the market if they are shown to have significant harmfull side-effects; they have a significant fear of litigation and damage to the brand. It's not a risk they need to take.

For example, Sibutramine has just been pulled from the European market because of just 7 deaths (out of hundreds of thousands of users) which *might* have been linked to use of the drug, however all of the deaths were cases where the people were already at high risk so it's very hard to say if it was the drug or not.

Big businesses might be unethical, but they are usually not stupid even when it's just bad science.

Vioxx has been the market for quite a time. Merck manipulated studies and tried to silence the critics.
And you can't compare death's to sexual side effects.

Because if they leave a product on a market and they now it can be life-threatening, why should they put down a product which is known to cause serious sexual side effects and/or gynecomastia?

Those are peanuts compared to Vioxx.
