To Those On The Fence About Starting Finasteride Or Treatment In General

Hello friends!

I just wanted to share my experience with finasteride for those of you who might be trying to decide if it is worth it. I am not telling you to take it, I understand why people are hesitant, but I have had a positive experience and I think it is right for me to share it with you.

I'm in my late 20's, been on finasteride for about 8ish months. Prior to starting finasteride I was NW2.5, getting dangerously close to NW3 with the front starting to noticeably thin out. To my horror and misery it was beginning to be pointed out by other people in public.

About 7 months into finasteride I realized I've been restored to NW2/full head of hair with minor temple recession. For the first time in YEARS I've gotten a short hair cut, and I've and been going out and about with no hat and no concern or worry of being called out for balding.

Just like that it's like a great burden has been lifted off my shoulders, and I have been set free

The only side effect I have experienced up to this point is watery jizz. I understand why some people might find this concerning, but to me, if this is the only side effect I end up with, it is a small price to pay to keep my hair.

As I look around and see many people my age with similar recession, and even worse to what I had prior, I feel a great sense of relief that I did not start any later than I did. I can live with this head of hair. I hope I will be a long term responder. If not, I almost definitely go the transplant route in the future.

Just some food for thought for those of you wondering if finasteride might be worth it. Also I am using it concurrently with minoxidil and nizoral shampoo

Youre really a very good responder to finasteride then, unfortunately not everyone can expect so great results but it proves there is great potential, and to convince the sideeffect-whiners its worth a try. its good to see real success stories in this weird time when the hairloss community is wasting time with nofap and ridiculous "natural cures" while dreaming of success with fake cures like brotzu and replicell. You say they are on the fence but truth is, for too many , theyre not even on the right fence.
Im on dutasteride by the way, awesome effect and no bad sideeffects, not even the watery load thing that i too had on finasteride.

Aside from me being in my early 20s, I feel like I could've written your post word-for-word. I, too, started about 8 months ago and have experienced strikingly similar results. No substantial sides of which to speak.

Are you in the US? If so, which pharmacy do you use? I try to tell everyone about Walmart's $9 30-day supply of 5mg finasteride, which can be cut into quarters for a 120-day supply. All for 9 bucks. It's great.

Discussion forums give the impression that finasteride makes one permanently impotent or worse. In reality, most men experience little side effects. Have been taking it for 7 mounts myself. No regrowth, but my impression is that hair loss has stopped. Only side is less ejaculation volume, which I take as a sign that the drug works, and counteracts enlarged prostate as well.
Very true. Forums and the side effect hysteria has done a lot of damage. Im now on the "extremely dangerous" dutasteride and been enjoying every day of it, all the serious problems and devastating side effects i was promised are absent, but AS ALWAYS those who spell doom over dutasteride users never used it themselves.

Glad to see this post - especially the recommendation on the low cost finasteride. I will honestly admit I am one of those people "on the fence" - one because of the cost (which the rec makes me reconsider), but also because I naturally have a low libido and therefore fear that even a slight change as a minimal side effect that others would not even notice will affect me a lot more. Other than the watery mentions above, no one has noticed any decrease whatsoever in libido? Do not fear - I am not an illogical fear monger who will not listen to your replies and waste your time, hence why I am posting here - I will just quickly post why I have not started yet and why I am considering finasteride to help you out if you care to reply:

Why not:
-Cost (mentioned above)
-Low libido (mentioned above)
-I just am honestly hesitant to add a permanent addition to my treatment (currently on minoxidil and nizoral) that fundamentally changes how some of my hormones work (with the additional fear that perhaps there are long term effects past 20+ years that we do not yet know of due to the newness of the treatment).
-Girlfriend is worried it will affect our sex life and says she could not care less about the hair on my head, but would care a lot about a change in our sex life in a negative way. Granted we both know we will not get married so this is not a permanent reason for the rest of my life, but a very real current one.

Why I am considering:
-My biggest cause to want to TRY finasteride is that I am 26, at a Norwood 2, and had an excellent reaction to minoxidil. Lot's of regrowth - however now that a year has passed, my hair is still healthy and fine but slowly thinning in a generalized manner and feel it is now or never to try finasteride before I begin to follow my dad's footsteps.

Any thoughts appreciated - thanks all!

I have no idea if my libido is technically slightly lower. It's not noticeable or detracting from my ability to get an erection.

Analyzing pics, I'd say I've regained approx 3 years of lost hair up to this point. Def happy right now I got on it. So far it's looking to be a solid life decision

I dont believe that people are purposely trying to spread hysteria, they are simply reporting their symptoms.

Everyone responds differently to treatments, I think we can all agree with that.

I was personally on finasteride for 7.5 years, and it did amazing things for my hair, it had a great mop on my head until the day I dropped it. I got lots of attention from women too, all told, I really benefited from taking it in many ways.

I did however experience, a sense of being permanently out of it and it took me longer to process and "get" things (I was always 2-3 seconds behind on conversations). I did get by in a pretty demanding high level job nevertheless. I had softer erections, less interest in sex and watery semen, not to mention often forgot words and was often tongue tied. I forgot to take my finasteride on a week long biz trip when I was 27, and suddenly I felt like a cloud had lifted a few days later, and all those sides went away. I had experimented by taking 2 days off prior to that with definite improvements, but always went back on. It was on that biz trip that I stopped taking finasteride and never looked back, that was 12 years ago or so. I still have decent hair, have a beautiful and great fiance and a baby on the way.

I have no regrets I took finasteride, and would recommend people try it and see how it works for them. You may get sides, hopefully you will be one of most that dont get any. If you experience sides, you can stop and by all accounts, I believe they should reverse.

Ultimately I am also happy now that I am off of it. I get more accomplished at work, have better sex drive and feel more connected to people and life in general.

If I had to do it all over again, I would take zinc picolinate (50mgs), for libido and vitamin d3 the sunshine vitamin. I suspect the sides I experienced would have been much better.

finasteride can do wonders for people, and some may not get the same benefits. Some will experience no sides, some minor sides, and others more severe. It should not stop you from trying though, to see how it works for you.

It's funny you mention your supplements. For completely non-hair related reasons, I take a few supplements that include a massive amount of vitamin d3 as well as some zinc. It might be placebo but I have felt that d3 helps keep my spirits up

Is there anything about zinc picolinate that makes it preferable to standard zinc?

Yes it was all at the front of my hair, I don't have any visible crown loss

Sorry to hear about your situation. Have you considered trying dutasteride?

A month is nothing.... Give it at least 4-6 months, it takes time for hair to slow the shedding and grow into visible results.

Yes, I agree especially in the winter. I dont find it keeps my spirits up as much as it keeps my spirits from going into the lows and negative pessimistic thougts. I take 5000 ius of vitd3 (now brand)
