I've been watching these guys

And they make the point with regards to topical finasteride that test gets made into DHT at the liver, as well, so if you're using topical finasteride and disrupting 5AR in the hair follicles, you're still get that DHT from the liver getting up there through the blood stream.

Is this a valid objection to topical finasteride?

Have there been any studies comparing the results of topical and oral finasteride?

Some of the topical finasteride will go systemic. It is unavoidable. It isn't known exactly how much goes systemic, and the amount probably depends upon the specific topical formulation. It also isn't known to what extent topical finasteride works due to the fact that it goes systemic in the first place. It would be good for a study to be done on the question of whether topical finasteride works primarily through going systemic, or whether it works as we intend it to through a localized mode of action.
