UK members, see your GP for a cheap finasteride prescription

I just posted the quote below in another thread, I signed up just to point this out because I think many UK members here don't seem to be aware and are ordering their finasteride online needlessly.

... I've seen nobody else post this but in the UK it is possible to get a prescription for 5mg Finasteride which is non-branded & cheap.

I paid £5.99 for 28 pills from my local pharmacy (which quartered will tide me over for 4 months).

Was previously on Propecia for 2 months, paying ~£50 per month, so I was overjoyed with the saving. All I did was ask my pharmacist how much the 5mg would cost and then next time I saw my doctor I mentioned the massive price difference, asked if I could be prescribed that instead and cut up my pills. The doctor checked with a colleague but both were totally fine with it.

My advice to Brits is don't order finasteride off the internet, see your GP and ASK and it's highly likely you can get legit stuff cheaply from your local pharmacy.

This is good news, but I still believe a lot of GPs lack knowledge of finasteride and will be wary of prescribing it. So it's generic proscar I'm assuming you're getting for that price?
Anyway thanks for posting, this works out about half the price I was getting it online for.

No probs, I don't want people wasting money like I did!

Yeah I saw 2 different doctors (doctor 1 for initial 2 Propecia prescriptions, then on month 3 it was another doctor when I asked about going generic). Whilst neither really had experience prescribing finasteride for hairloss in both cases they looked it up/spoke to colleagues and got back to me with a prescription the same day.

I guess if you're unlucky and get a doctor who won't prescribe you it, you could try asking to see another doctor or ask for a referral. But it's definitely worth a try eh.

The only thing that suprised me was that I prescribed 28 pills, four months in one go. I thought I would be given one month's supply (7 pills) at my dosage, knowing I was going to quarter them.

Also the pills I got were not Merck Proscar, but truly non-branded it seems, called 'Finasteride 5mg' made by Aurobindo Pharma Limited. Seems they're the legit UK manufacturers.

Found one other forum reference to the same stuff here: viewtopic.php?f=61&t=59743

You won't find many gps who will prescribe you the wrong drug, no matter if it's the same stuff.

Sorry but that sentence doesn't really make any sense?

Doctors prescribe the drug (Finasteride) and the dosage.

My doctor wrote on my prescription 'patient understands he is to cut up pills to 1.25mg daily'.

Doctors are understanding people, they don't want you to get ripped off.

You are lucky. Not many doctors / gp's in the uk will prescribe proscar or 5mg finasteride for male pattern baldness. They can actually be struck off. They are relying on you cutting it in quarters and even then, you are taking 1.25mg of finasteride.

I am gonna visit my GP soon and see how I get on, and will post back the results.

Anyway it seems like there has been a massive drop in generic proscar prices for whatever reason, both here and in the US.

Do you have a source to back that up? Sounds like speculation to me.

Doctors always rely on the patients to follow the prescribed dosage. If I was to go back there sooner than 4 months (having over-dosed) they probably wouldn't give me any more. Same goes if you're prescribed a month's Propecia and decide to take 2 a day or something like that.

Regarding the 1.25mg dosage my doctor said something along the lines of 'you understand you will be taking slightly more than the recommended dosage', talked about how it should still be safe and how 5mg was prescribed for older men with prostate problems and repeated the sides to me again.

It could have helped that I'm a fairly mature 25yr old & was dressed for work.

Anyway I'm saying it's worth a shot, maybe I just got lucky, but there were basically 3 doctors (2 I met and colleague that one asked) to which the issue of the 5mg was mentioned and no obvious objections were raised.

It's obviously sensible advice to always see your doctor anyway. Jus' saying :)

Edit: Good luck goat, be interesting to see how you get on!

My GP was sh*t and just told me treatments were available but I would have to go private. She didn't even confirm it was male pattern baldness.

went to see my GP about proscar (as it is sooo much cheaper in local pharmacy Lloyds)

He was very impressed with my knowledge but had to refer it to the head of the practice who said no, their Insurance wouldn't cover it apparently...

I told them i would sign a waiver but they were having none of it.

told them i would be buying it anyway at a great mark-up but they were happy with that, as long as it wasn't from them.

From the above, you got really lucky.

GP or physicians will very unlikely prescribe proscar for male pattern baldness. They are too scared for the law suit to occur and they can be struck off if a major mishap occurs. Very unlikely, but many won't risk it.

Some GP's in the uk don't even want to prescribe propecia as they are stuck in the dark ages. Even if it is on private prescription.

Anyway, jealous as you got them to sign it off for you and even put it on the cheap.

My GP told me that the best treatment was a pair of hair clippers

Can I ask where is a reliable place to purchase generic Proscar? I asked my doctor about it and she had no idea what Proscar was...

She was willing to prescribe Propecia, but that stuff is spendy!

but please be consider carefully if you are willing to accept the risk of potential sides (which can be permanent). Get your bloods taken before you begin also. Its a serious drug- take it seriously.
