Uneven loss? Do I have pattern baldness?

After consoling a friend the other night about his receding hairline, I decided to check mine, giving it the first close look I have in my life. I was surprised to find a small bald patch on my lower right temple (My hair's usually 2-4" long, so it's been covered), more like a triangle than anything on the charts, about 1"x1"x1" . I was immeadeatly concerned, as I never thought about male pattern baldness since my dad is in his 60's and has a full head of hair and I never knew my maternal grandfather. Anyways, my left scalp looks perfect, the same as it did when I was 18 (Yes, I consulted photos). So my question is how concerned should I be? I'll be OK with it if I can make it to, say, 40 with moderate recession around the temples (Hamilton IV maybe?), but I'm relatively young (24). Is there any way to gauge how much will be lost? My hair appears to be thin nowhere else, not even in the area surrounding the bare spot, another reason why this was so shocking. Is this unusual? May I have some other problem then typical male pattern baldness?

Yeah, I'm sorry if I came across as inscoucant, but it's somewhat harrowing to find a bald spot along your temple that wasn't there before. Seriously, I have the deepest sympathy for those that began losing their hair at a very early age, such as as a teenager... You know, I just found this thing and I was just hoping someone would tell me what the deal is with this is. Really, what I want to know if this is the normal process or if maybe there's something wierd going on with me and I should see a doctor or something. Is it normal to lose some hair on one side and not another?

There is no rule that says one recedes in a perfectly symmetrical fashion. It is actually quite common for one side to either recede more, thin more, or both compared to the other... Especially considering how closely we scrutinize ourselves! What may seem like an obvious difference between two sides may, in context of nature, be pretty damn close.

Anyhow, you'll have to post some pics for us to really be able to give you a solid opinion.

I'm really much too shy to post pics. It's enough that you informed me that this comes in unevenly anyway. Thank you very much. I'll keep on watching htese forums. I've already learned so much. Thanks again.

Take pics now and keep an eye on it if you're concerned, but don't let it consume you. I'm willing to bet that if we saw your pics people would think you don't have any significant hairloss. However, to give you my feedback, I've always thinned unevenly with my left temple being about a 6-12 month preview of what my right temple will become.

When you say bald patch, how thin are we talking about? very sparse hair in the area? Because that would be rather odd if it thinned considerably, without any thinning at all on the other side. Granted, hair loss isn't perfectly symmetrical, but it would be odd to have one temple with a very thin patch of hair and not any sign of loss at all at the other temple.

Anyway, like other posters said, either pics or a trip to the derm might help alleviate some of the anxiety of not knowing, but if you don't feel like doing either of those, that's cool too; just don't hesitate to ask any other questions you might have.
