Using minoxidil only once a day - worst than not using?

Hello there.

I'm a diffuse thinner (extremely think hair even at the sides and back) who depends on dermmatch to achieve a satisfying look.

I've been doing propecia for 7 years, and in the last year I started using nizoral 2% twice a week.

I've never considered using minoxidil because I was afraid of the shedding issue.

Right now I must use dermmatch concealer everyday in the morning, before I go to work, so that makes it impossible to use minoxidil in the morning.

Still, I could wash my hair in the night and then apply minoxidil.

Using minoxidil 5% only once a day will be better than not using at all? Won't it increase shedding, or increase hair loss?

Best regards

I used minoxidil religiously for 6-7 months, I had some minor regrowth but nothing major. I was caught in two minds between quitting or applying it once a day.

I decided to go with once a day application. There are some other threads in the forum where the the subject has been discussed and the general consensus is that once a day application is better than nothing.

I think once a day application is working for me at the moment.

Are there any reports where minoxidil actually did much worse than good?

The reason why I'm asking about minoxidil, after using propecia for so long, is that I've been using the 2% solution applied to my face, in the last 6 months, to get a thicker beard (yes... there's even a forum about this!), and it has been working. At the same time, I see that my hair is thinner, and then several questions come to my mind - "if minoxidil thickened and made new facial hair grow, will it thicken my scalp hair?"; "why is my hair thinner? is it because of the 2% minoxidil in my face?"

Even though my hair is much thinner now, I have some vellus hair on the region where my forehead intersects with my temples, as well as a bit of velus hair under the outer portion of my eye region.

What do you think?

Bryan is the expert on the subject... I don't know how to answer your questions...

I think minoxidil works on a area wider than the applied area. I have some minoxidil contamination around my eyebrows as well. I'm careful not to spread it around, but the hairs I get around my eyebrows shows that either it works on a wider area or I have contamination. Or both the same time...

When it comes to doing more bad than good... Some users swear that they shed hair and the hair doesn't come back. I personally think that their hair was programmed to go and it has nothing to do with minoxidil.

Keep reading about it.. there are some interesting threads in the forum..

Good luck

Hi.
Im applying minoxidil 5% at night only. I've been doing that for 2 years, no shedding, no side effects, no "eating hair line" basically it stopped my hair loss.

I've been reading that at some point minoxidil can stop working like in 5 rears of using it. Is that true? what then?

Hmmm. Good question. I can tell you this much minoxidil twice a day innitiated quite abit of shedding for me, so much infact that the hair i gained from it would shed within a few weeks of gaining it. However using a once aday application greatlly reduced side effects and helped me see my results longer as shedding was significantlly reduced. On the other hand however results were slow gaining compared to using it twice a day. I would say its down to how sensitive your hairs are to dht. If propecia's not working every shed could be more fatal to your hair as its on its way out anyway. Its a gamble really a case extra blood circulation verses DHT. To overide dht you may need a more powerful minoxidil application of 5%-15%. However if this fails your hair would end up even worse due to even more shedding so i can see your dilema. I've heard very people shed of 2% minoxidil so i would start with this and experiment with using it once or twice a day to see how things go. It might not give you regrowth but it should at least slow your hairloss down without the worry of shedding.

Using minoxidil in conjunction with finasteride will make both drugs more effective. They work well in synergy with each other. There was a graph floating about showing hair counts, but i didn't save it to my computer.
