Very self oppinionated dermatologists (my recent experience)

Hmm, im wondering if anyone have experienced dermatologists that are rather nazish if you know what i mean? Some seem very stubborn and self oppinionated/harsh


I went to mine today and was discussing my receding hairline. She talked as if i was predestined to eventually go completely bald (like the highest norwood) because i had a receding hairline at 20 years old (about a norwood 1.5 probably). Maybe that i can believe but but she stated she could see my crown thinning (she was sitting 5 feet away but there was a mirror behind so i guess thats how she could see maybe maybe? Well, the point is im pretty sure my crown isnt even thinning at all. I mean my hair overall its rather dense (high number per square unit) yet my hairs are medium to fine texture. Anyway, its pretty obvious when you have a fine hair or hair thats becoming finer (balding areas). Lol, when i got home i sampled random hairs around my scalp including the crown area. Well, they all seemed to be within the same diameter. Some are slightly thicker than others but it didnt have to do with the area.

It also cracks me up that she talked that if i followed my dads pattern i would be bald for sure. She said he has really gotten thin. He's 58 and a NORWOOD 2 people!!!!!!!! When i got home i told him and we checked out his hair. Looks pretty good to me. Im pretty sure most of the balding people here would kill for his hair. He does take propecia though since he was about 55 but that has ony maintained his hair. Once again he is a middle aged man so i could understand some thinning. He looked at my crown and said it looked the same as the other hair.

The only thing i can possibly think of is because she could see my crown area for A: My hair is only about half an inch long right now and B) People have growth patterns on their crown when viewed from the proper angle and proper length could show vissible scalp. I was sitting at the right angle.

Either way im not trying to be in self denial but i think she is a little quick to reach assumptions. I have been watching my crown very closely probably the last year. It looks fine and healthy like it always has.

She also professed that propecia is such a great drug. I told that i didnt want to take it unless i got really bad in the future. she talked like there were no side effects and it was just completely wonderful (duhh, there are for some guys).



I was just saying whatever to her because i really disagreed with a lot of the info she was saying.

I;ve had bad luck with a derm before, though it was the opposite case - he pretty much told me "let's assume its not just percieved loss...." and then said "even if it is happening...." it was just my hairline "maturing" and there was nothing I could do to stop it, people lost hair as they got older.

He said not to do propecia, as he thought i was too young for it. He also sold me some quack story about minoxidil maintaininghair, but not regrowing it.

They have to see people with serious rashes, skin cancer, etc every day. Thus they look on hair loss somewhat lightly...

felks totally right, most derms are too busy dealing with gross skin conditions and cancers all with far more life threatening potential than hair loss. so they arent gonna worry to much about us.

there are good derms out there, its just a matter of finding them. there will be an aussie hairloss site opening up soon which will have a feature where you can rate derms and get a good list of hairloss sympathetic derms together for each area. might help the aussies anyway.

The good thing is that she is concerned i think. She got me started on rogaine about two years ago to catch the problem early. I also started on propecia about a year ago but only lasted a few months because my md advised me otherwise about potiental bad side effects.

She is definately concerned but seems to exagerate the problem making you feel like your ultimately doomed!

I'd be interested in that, definately. Be good to have a real opinion from a good derm.

I visited a derm in early july...I'd had about 6 months straight of extreme depression and panic attacks, and towards the end of it my hair started falling out in ridiculous volumes (it fell out from maybe february to may?). When I saw him, he told me after a two second scan of my hair that it was male pattern baldness and that I would be bald really fast if I didn't get on propecia now. I tried to say something about stress and he was just like "nope, the receded hairline means it wasn't that!" (I've had a slowly receding hairline for a few years, but during the stress-hairdeath event they receded considerably farther) and disregarded it. SO, now I'm on propecia, which is probably a good thing cause I DID have a slowly receding hairline before the huge explosion of hairloss in the last few months, but I remain 90% convinced that I had a case of telogen effluvium, and it's unfortunate that the derm I saw was such a jerk and clearly just wanted to get me out of there as fast as possible.

Philip,

I'm confused. Are you upset because your derm told you what you didn't want to hear. She told you that you are going bald and you should take rogaine and propecia and that propecia has minimal side effects. What exactly are you upset about. Sounds like a good doctor to me.
