Volume/Density Differential

There seems to be a volume difference on the top of the head than the sides in almost all men, even non male pattern baldness-affected men. I do have a couple of friends however, that do have an even density on every single follicle on their head. I believe that there are many more like this, but not a great percentage.

I started seeing this volume difference in myself about two years back although it's not too bad. I can usually deal with it by cutting my hair shorter on the sides, while keeping the top longer. Can anybody relate when they discovered their volume difference of their top/sides and briefly describe their story of how they deal with it?

yes, there is, and in most men, the hair on the sides grows quicker..perhaps the reason is, to a degree almost all men have some MPH, or at least, the signs, its just more progressed in some of us than others...even a guy with a great hairdo will have slightly less volume on the top,and typically the characteristics are differently (more soft, styles and moves easier)..teh sides are harder (thicker) and usually darker.

Well I don't ahve much to say...only that yeh I can notice the difference. You know the horseshoe thing...well I still got hair on top but its thinning and grows shorter than the sides/back and seems more brittle wen I run my fingers across it. The back and sides feel great, sooo think and dense.
Just hope this finasteride does something about thikening up the top and temples...

I don't know if this is related so much, but I wonder if the thickness of skin on the sides and back of the head makes a difference in male pattern baldness. I know that the argument is shot down by the fact that hair transplants move follicles from the sides to the top scalp, and those hairs live on forever. but if you feel your head/scalp skin, you can tell that the skin is really thin, not so "fleshy", at the vertex, crown, and the temples where the skin is "stretched" by the "corners" of the skull. Am I making sense? It's just too much of a coincidence to me that the hairs in these areas go first. It's as if they are malnutritioned all of our life, and finally give in or something.

Food for thought. Good luck guys.

Some good points. I always try to massage the top of my scalp everytime I get ouf of the shower just to get as much possible circulation since like you mentioned, it's the thinnest part of the scalp.

Well, here's something that will make a few guys feel better-

I remember when I was in my early 20s, like 21-22, my friend came over once and had said to me, "Dude! You're going bald!"

I had my hair all hair-sprayed up, and my hair appears thin on top when it's got gel or spray in it. I never thought twice about what he said that day because I knew I wasn't losing my hair. But yeah, I had thinner hair on top than on the sides, no doubt. Today, at 29, my hair is in the exact same state that it was then- I still appear to be thin on top when I have spray in it. When it's dry, it's thick and non-thinning. Nonetheless, I have thinner hair on top, so it doesn't mean you're balding !!!

Same here XL. I do the same thing - sides shorter, top longer.

Not much else you can do. Luckily it's not really apparent visually or to the touch with this kind of hair cut.

xzel, what makes you think it's a young girl? :p, I can't actually see if it is a boy or a girl, but then it came to me that I'm a complete moron, asking stupid irrelevant questions :hairy: :D

You know, I've never noticed that fluttering thing on the kid's head before.

In answer to your question, I just don't know. I didn't film that footage or anything.

All I know is that it's funny as sh*t and it trips me out every time I see it.
