Guys,
I want to quit finasteride after 5 months of use. It doesn't help me (it got my hair even worse).
So I started to read on the internet what is the best way to quit (cold-turkey or tapperin) and I came across with the propecia help site,
and now I am scared as I have never been before. It seems just like hell, the stories there.
Something that is unsolvable, something very very bad. Doctors cant help. It freaks me out. I need your help here.
How to quit finasteride? did someone here quit finasteride after a long period of time and can spill some light?

Thanks

Trying to quit finasteride and going on propecia help is like trying to eat meat again and going on the PETA website. You have to understand that propeciahelp is a collective group of people who believe that finasteride has destroyed their life, it is not an accurate representation of the population of finasteride users. I was on it for a year, quit because it was literally making all my hair fall out like a chemo patient and now, I am o.k.? I think? I am still losing hair and have the libido of a sixteen year old, but who knows... You want personal opinions? Some will praise it, as they have a right to. It has saved their hair. Some, like myself, think it's a horrendous f*cking nightmare. MOST, will tell you to stay on it for at least 10 months and DON'T listen to propeciahelp victims.

oh and to more specifically address your question, there are obviously two choices if you're insistent on quitting - a) cold turkey and b) taper off, reducing dosage week by week. I think there's no problem with either. If I were you, I would just drop that crap like a rock.

if uve had no problems while on it, especially if uve had no success, id say ur chances of having permanent sides are zero to none, most people who suffer pfs had some signs before they got off it. you should be good, tapering off would be the safest bet tho

if it makes you feel any better i had some side effects and recovered to 100% in 2 weeks

Thank you guys, it made me feel a lot better.
g.i joey - when you quit - how long were you on finasteride before..
and did you quit slowly? how did you do that? the pill is so small, to cut it to 0.125 is hard - so to cut to even smaller dosages its almost impossible.

Thanks

I quit after around 5 to 7 months, most sides went away by 1 week and the only side that actually took 2 weeks to return was the sex drive and solid erections. I really think you have nothing to worry about especially since finasteride dint even work for you, you've probably never had sides either lol

Well, I think I did have some sides, but I am not sure they were related to finasteride. It was mainly mental - like anxiety and stuff.. but it went away after a short term.
Anyway, thanks for the answer. Did you quit cold turkey? what was the dose you took throughout these 5-7 months?

Stop going to the horror stories website.. seriously.. You even said in another post that you are starting to develop sides, psychosomatic sides.. I took finasteride for 13+ yrs, quit cold turkey and nothing happened, I`m back on it and nothing happened.

Taper off to be safe. 99.99% change you'll be fine.

The thing with tapering off is that I need a certain strategy. I mean - should I take 0.25 ED now? and for how long? and then going for EOD? and then every 4 days? for what period of time?
And then 0.125 mg? It can all end up in 4 months from now - way too much. Every single day that my body gets finasteride, I feel uncomfortable with it. And also cutting that tiny pill into 8 is almost impossible..
So that kinda makes me wonder if it worth at all.

Can I ask why did you quit?

Sure, I came across all the stupid horror stories.. and got scared as hell, just like you did.. Despite being on it for like 13 yrs and never having any issue. Healthy as a horse.

After I realised it was for the great part bull**** or ppl with previous conditions or a very small percentage of ppl with the real PFS, and discussing it with my GP, I went back on it (not before loosing half an inch on my hairline)..

I also have a couple friends, one who took it for around 5yrs then quit (did not have any issues before/after and the lucky did not loose any hair when came off) and another one who is still on it for 15 years, none had any issues (and I did not tell them about propeciahelp, they have no clue of any sides and I let them enjoy their ignorance)..

I would buy a sensitive digital scale, weigh a full pill, grind the pills and weigh to dose.

The problem is that there is such a huge range of DHT inhibition within the 0-0.2mg dosage range. Even 0.01mg inhibits 10.8% of serum DHT.

Wish I did that!

I stopped cold turkey after 4 months and lost half of my hair evenly over 3 weeks. The problem I had with this drug was ringing in the ears which hasn't stopped and grey elephant skin under my eyes. One more than the other.

In defense of Finasteride, while I was taking it, my loss appeared to slow if not stop. What I loved about the drug is that it made me horny as hell every day which was a surprise but welcomed. Now that's gone.

So I've decided to slowly tapering off. But I have a problem:
I tried to cut the 1mg propecia pill to 8 pieces (=0.125 each) and:
1. It's not so easy.. it sometimes shreded during the cutting and some parts are gone.
2. The pieces remain without the covering, which made me think - will the finasteride ever arrive at its destination? Won't it dissolve in the saliva?

This is why some people stuff quarters down their nose ;)

Where do you think saliva goes?

I don't know man... the cover is there for a reason. Could we just take the pill, crush it and spill to a glass of water and drink it? I am not sure..

My doctor told me its better to taper off but he said something like: 1 week with 1mg EOD, then 10 days 1mg every 3 days, then 10 days 1mg every 4 days.

It sounds a bit useless if we take into account that 1 mg of finasteride changes the DHT level for at least 7 days.
I think many doctors aren't even aware about the whole finasteride doses thing...

What do you guys think?

The cover is there to avoid people (like pregnant woman or children) to get in contact with it.

I think you have an anxiety issue

I know I shouldn't go in to propeciahelp :/
But its too late and I did it.. now I just want to make sure I do things right.. I would like to take small dosages but I think about a case that if I take 0.25 or less then the pill is just solid powder with no protective cover, may be (thats why I am asking here) lost on the way and then it's like I didn't consume anything = cold turkey thing.
This is just to clear what is the reason I am asking these silly questions. Sorry
