What Causes the Shine on a Bald Man's Head?

My guess is that the skull got to close to the skin (hence skull expansion, something triggered by DHT).

Well at least it's a good guess...I've read a scholarly article talking about skull expansion and how it's triggered by DHT.

Well I get it now. Ya know something, it would make sense if hair loss occurred just as a result of cancer/sickness.

The only thing that should go with age is pigment.

I always thought the shine was down to the sebaceous glands secreting sebum but the hair is no longer there to lubricate so the sebum just forms on the scalp giving you an oily/shiny scalp?

If you were to want to get rid of the shine there is a product called headblade head lube that is a moisturiser that was specifically made to take the shine off bald scalps, just Google it. Don’t know if it works though.

Anyway, has anyone out there ever effectively treated this and got results? I'm at a NW3 and I can feel my temple area getting a little slick so I want to treat it before it's too late.

Fibrosis in male pattern baldness occurs below the skin. Ostia, the hair follicle openings, are preserved in normal male pattern baldness. The shine is most likely just due to the type of skin on the scalp combined with normal sebum.

People's foreheads get shiny when they are oily. There really is no difference.
