What Is Happening To My Hair Over The Last Year?

Over the last year I have noticed severe thinning on the crown on my head along with a lot of shedding, tender skin in the area and general burning sensation. This began exactly this time last year lasted for 4ish months then the shedding and pain stopped for a couple of months and now its all come back. I have noticed a bit of shedding coming from everywhere such as my back but the worst hit is my scalp.

I have attended several GP meetings and even met a dermatologist who have said that there are no signs of balding but after doing blood tests etc have not been able to find any issues on that front. So according to them my hair is thinning but it should grow back but they have not given any reasons or any solutions.

My hairline is a strong norwood 2 and has not changed over the last year.

Anyone heard or seen anything like this before?

These pictures go in chronological order since last year and are all with wet hair, when my hair is dry the thinning areas are quite hard to spot.

And my hair has thinned out quite a lot all over my scalp

Hey man, we’ve all been through that denial phase and seeing dermatologists for reassurance. No sign of balding? Those dermatologists need to change jobs.

I’m sorry to break it out to you: you have male pattern baldness in a diffuse pattern. Pretty much like mine.

The burning scalp is 100% psychosomatic. I’ve had the exact same thing happen to me any time I would start freaking out. The burn lasted for a full year until I stopped caring. You mention that the burn stopped when you noticed that your shedding stopped. That’s because you stopped paying attention to hairloss and started relaxing again.

You have a few options and thankfully a diffuse alopecia responds pretty well to treatments. Depending on your age I would start finasteride. There are other options too.

Absolutely disgusting that a dermatologist would say that.

Like previous guy said, you're on it early so you can still salvage things. Finasteride is a good option if you're at least past your 20's, messing with your hormones in your teens is not advised.

What concerns me the most is that when i wake up from bed etc there isnt much hair on my pillows but there is hair all over the mattress from my back etc. Even if I am balding there is something else also triggering my shedding.

Also im 20 so i dont think drugs are a great idea

It's like the first responder said, you have androgenic alopecia. Stop with the burning, tingling, back hair shedding nonsense. You're losing your hair and you're not a special case.......20 years old, likely old enough for finasteride. If you'd like to wait another year or so, knock yourself out. At least start minoxidil while you're in this holding pattern, but you will be balder no matter what if you wait.

Let's cut to the chase, that looks bad for the age of 20.

Get on finasteride (if you don't like side effects then the topical) and minoxidil as soon as you can.

I suspect the blood tests just show you are healthy which is all well and good but it won't matter much regarding DHT.

Your dermatologist is clueless.

Absolutely balding. Treatment options are limited. Before you decide what to do make sure you do your homework and understand benefits v.s. risks!

It looks like it is progressed comparing to your original photos. Do any of the males in your family have male pattern baldness? The hair on your sides were also thin. Is it the same? Did your hairline change at all this past year?

All those photos have been taken over the last year, so the first one was this time last year which happened in about a month and then each photo is about like 2 - 3 months apart

Everyone on my mum's side has hair and everyone one my dad's side does not

The hair on my sides are still very thin and my hairline has remained exactly the same over the last year but hair all over scalp is thin

If you can take your photos to the doctor that you feel was the most knowledgeable and responsive. Show your photos in a timeline starting with your hair before you noticed any hair loss. As many angles as you can find. Your sides always looked a bit thin in your uploaded pics and I believe it would be helpful to have a baseline side pic to show along with your other pics. All my uncles on both sides were at least a Norwood 5 when I first started noticing my hair loss so I went through our photo albums and got a very good idea of what to expect. My brothers didn't care to do anything about their hair loss and they eventually followed our family pattern almost exactly. Have a look at the photos of the males in your family when they were your age if you have any. Some people may tell you to start a regimen now, but you would have to get a prescription for something like finasteride through a doctor anyway considering this is a route you are willing to take.
