What is the general consensus on how effective Nizoral is? Lets have an answer.

There are studies that show Nizoral shampoo or cream to be a highly effective male pattern baldness treatment, some of which show Nizoral to even outperform Minoxidil. In the product reviews section of this forum, Nizoral is also described as being highly effective and essential to your regimen. This is the first line of the review: "Nizoral shampoo is the most important component of every hair loss treatment regimen. Find out why no regimen will work well without it."

On the other hand, however, it appears that most of the more experienced users of these forums, such as zzzzz, have a less favorable opinion of Nizoral. The majority of people on these forums that have used Nizoral seem not to have found it to help much. You can tell by going to the success stories section, where there are loads of Finasteride success stories, but virtually none from men who have used Nizoral without also using finasteride or dutasteride.

I'd like if we could have some sort of a consensus on exactly how effective Nizoral is an a male pattern baldness treatment. I think it is fairly obvious that it will not save your hair long-term if used as a stand-alone treatment, but I'm sure it would at least help a little to slow down your hair loss. What would be the overall opinion of the people on these forums?

Since I am on finasteride I don't feel the need to worry about Nizoral. I mean I am sure it's anti inflammatory/anti androgen to an extent but not anywhere near as effective as finasteride.

Plus I don't have that male pattern baldness itch EVER, I am sure there is some inflammation though as I have male pattern baldness, but I expect the finasteride to take care of the DHT for this to be a non issue.

In short, Nizoral is cheap but I'll only use it twice a week if I have dermatitis which quite a few people do with male pattern baldness.

I've always had a clean dry scalp so don't wan't to dry it further.

There was one study which basically concluded:

finasteride/minoxidil > finasteride/Nizoral > finasteride> minoxidil

Again though it didn't go into detail how finasteride/Nizoral was better and the impact it had. For maintenance, I would suspect an oral anti androgen is suffice.

I ordered some nizoral shampoo the other week and it arrived today. Considering I can't take finasteride, I have to at least try something. Hopefully it'll slow down my hair loss to some extent. I might even start taking some DHT blocker shampoo. But I imagine there aren't many legit or actually impacting ones out there...

Oh yeah - if not on finasteride due to sides I believe Nizoral becomes vital no matter how small the impact it has.

You guys do no that it decreases androgen receptor sensitivity over time as well as anti inflammatory properties ? There is no excuse not to be on it, the longer you use it the more effective it gets it's not going to bring you results overnight

The health of my scalp improved drastically from being on 2% nizoral alone. My scalp used to be a little inflamed and feel tight all the time. Maybe I was imagining things but the thickness/quality of my hair seemed to improve before jumping on finasteride.

My only gripe with it being that it drys my hair out immediately after using it.

I had horrendous dandruff, and Nizoral 1% eliminated it completely after 2 washes. It has never come back, and my head never itches. For that reason alone I recommend it. I use it every other day. I think it is frequently discarded or disregarded as part of the Big 3. Obviously it is nowhere near as effective as Finasteride and 5% Minoxidil, but I feel it is still essential. The clean, flake-free scalp without any buildup is the optimal condition for minoxidil to be applied. Only Ketoconazole shampoos can give you that. Also, I've heard the keto's effect on the scalp assists Finasteride in doing it's job just underneath the scalp (limiting DHT's destructive effects).

So use it if you don't plan on the Big 3, and use it if you do plan on jumping on the other 2 of the Big 3. No reason not to.

Being using it for three and a half years, maybe I'm wrong, but I'd highly recommend it and as someone who can get seb dermatitis on their scalp, it most def helped that and can't help it's aiding me in my battle with the old enemy. Didn't every finasteride study have their patients use an anti-inflammatory shampoo during trials?

No harm in adding it into your regimen. Also what Fred said.

I've tried it couple of times through the years. It always dried my hair and scalp, my hair looked just awful.. if took few weeks to recover. Now I use ciclopirox shampoo and it suits me great.

I've never had any scalp problems as far as skin conditions go i think. No dandruff, no significant itching, no redness, no nothing. Ever since I hopped on this whole ordeal I did give 2% Keto shampoo a try, every 3/4 days or so. For a couple weeks. The speed in which it deteriorated the texture of my hair and accelerated shedding was too scary for me to continue tho. :shakehead: Even when backing it up with top conditioners. Might give it another try after I stabilize.

Hasn't done anything for me, I mean if it was as good as minoxidil surely it would be on the bottle advertising that as well as anti-dandruff?
I still use it though, just in case

Actually, I am curious about this topic too. I just bought Nizoral 2% about 1 and a half week ago because my scalp was really irritated and it went full flame on mode. After using it once, my scalp became normal again, no itchyness anymore and my hair stopped falling out. The only part where my hair did fall out sometimes is the back of my head. I have no idea why this happens, but I'll try not washing the back of my head with nizoral. Before Nizoral I already was on Proscar split in 4 pieces with minoxidil. I feel like Proscar does help me keep the hair that I already have and I'm not sure if Minoxidil did anything positive because I applied it and didn't notice any regrowth. So my current regimen will be Proscar with Biotin and now Nizoral added.
