Effect of vitamin C on serum lipids and electrolyte profile of albino wistar rats.Eteng MU, Ibekwe HA, Amatey Telogen Effluvium, Bassey BJ, Uboh FU, Owu DU.
Department of Biochemistry,Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Calabar, [email protected],[email protected].

The effect of oral administration of vitamin C on serum lipids and electrolyte profile were investigated in albino rats of the Wistar strain. Eighteen (18) albino rats of opposite sexes weighing between 150-300g were used for the study and randomly assigned on the basis of body weight and litter origin to three study groups of six animals each. The control group received via oral route a placebo (4 ml of distilled water), while test groups 1 and II received 100 mg/kg body weight and 200 mg/kg body weight of vitamin C in 2.5 ml and 5.0 ml of the vehicle via gastric intubation respectively. The administration of vitamin C for 30 days produced a significant [P < 0.05] decrease in total cholesterol (TC), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) in the test groups versus control but there was no change in triglycerides (TG) and High density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Computed HDL:LDL ratio also increased in the treatments relative to the control. Except for computed HDL:LDL ratio all the other changes were dose dependent and there was a slight non-significant increase in all electrolytes (Na (+), K (+); and HCO3- ions. The study confirms the hypocholesterolaemic effect of vitamin C and that Vitamin C has no adverse effect on serum electrolytes. It is suggested that its administration in moderate to high doses may protect against atherosclerosis and hypertension.

I think all anti-oxidants fight off colds. They keep me from getting them. If I start feeling sick, I just pop my daily dose and symptoms go away.

I totally agree CCS. Since I 've taken green tea and now grapeseed extract I feel so much healthier and havent had a cold at all this winter and this winter has been brutal so far.

What do you think is more effective: antioxidant in the form of extracts (droppers/water boosters) or in the pill form? I spoke to a bunch of nutritionists and health food store persons and no one really knows.
The dropper form is so convenient. The only thing I am leary of is when the say on the bottle, 1ml = 15 cups of green tea! Yeah...ok! :?

I buy bulk powder from beyond-a-century.com. I get green tea extract, 50g, for $9. And a bunch of other extracts too. I get a mix throughout the day. Anti-oxidants don't seem to replace sleep, though.

I just looked again, and it is 100g for $9. I have no way of knowing if the more expensive ones are any better. The expensive ones don't give any more information about their manufacturing process. I don't buy from any sites that babble about the benifits of GTE but don't say what kind theirs is. Half the products at beyond-a-century are life extensioin brand or NOW, and the other half (the bulk powders) are their own brand. Bulk powders are a lot cheaper than pills in general, so I don't think the prices mean they are lower quality.

Anyone hear anything about organic coffee enimas a few times a week for 6 weeks? I met a PHD biochemist today, and he's been doing it since med school days about 45 yrs to keep healthy lipids.
He also recommended plant sterols, policosanol, red yeast rice and coQ10 to counteract the red yeast rice effect on coq10.

I am used to things exiting not entering. This would be a milestone if I partake!

if you want to take a chance you COULD get finasteride from an online pharmacy in which you dont know if your medications are legit or god knows where they come from.

or you could go to your local walgreens and get it.

and yea there are gonna be people saying "well how do you know that stuff is legit too?" but wouldnt you feel better getting it from there?

Because lowering cholesterol is not limited to simply drinking tea and working out. What about all the people who supposedly do so and their results do not change or barely change? Keep drinking tea?
Define eating healthy?

Save money on cholesterol tests and have your artery wall thickness measured now and 6 months from now to see if it is getting worse?

I doubt they clean the gall blader, though maybe the colon. Not sure why that would be needed. all the digestion and absorption is done further up stream.

Did anyone ever experiement with Red yeast rice? It acts like a statin drug and is very effective with most people. The AMA is terrified of this supplement. The question is that it acts like a statin so it will have a statin like effect but did anyone ever exp any sides from it, like those exp'd by statin users? Muscle cramping? Fasiculations?
PLease share if it applies.

I take Red Yeast Rice and have been taking it for two years. My total Cholestral used to be 245. Now it is 135 and my HDL is 55. This stuff has worked wounders for me and for others. I highly recomend it. Yes Red Yeast Rice is a natrual statin. It effectivly lowers total Cholestral. Raises good Cholestral and reduces Trigliserides. If you take it make sure your Docotor checks your liver function.

It has not affected my liver enzymes at all. I take 100mg COQ10 twice daily as well. The reason being is that Red Yeast rice is a natural statain and will lower your COQ10 levels. As for your liver I would recommend if you take Red Yeast rice take some Milk thistle with it. I take Now Foods Red Yeast Rice with COQ10 and Milk Thistle added. You can find it at bodybuilding.com or vitasprings.com. I highly recommend the Now Foods Red Yeast Rice product. I take 1,200 mg twice a day. If you start taking this product give it some time as Red yeast Rice will take a while to work. I highly recommend it. This stuff has kept me off of taking any Cholesterol medications.

Enema's do not cleanse the gall bladder, you would need olive oil, grapefruit juice and epsom salt and an evening fast to achieve that type of cleanse. Enema's will cleanse the large intestine but I am unsure if any gets into the small intestine (I have not read that it does).
