What Kind Of Dandruff Is This? They're Flakes With Hairs Rooted In Them?!

Hello everyone,

I'll be turning 23 in a couple months and I noticed my hair loss around 19 or 20 years old. It happened to occur after the first and only time a woman I was dating had broken my heart hahaha. I have aggressive thinning on my crown and the top of my head. After a stressful past month, I'm starting to think the right side of my hairline has receded a tiny bit.

Anyway, I've dealt with dandruff a lot of my life and I used head and shoulders to decent success. But one day it sort of stopped working for me and so I moved onto Nizoral which helped some more but I was still finding these little skin crumbs in my hair.

Here's the weird thing, I often get flakes with hairs in them. Like, some are just flat flakes with hairs sticking out of them, -- firmly rooted. Some of the flakes are kinda big and will have as many as 4 to 6 hairs in them. I've tried searching the web for any information on this but I can't seem to find anything as specific as these hair-filled flakes.

I've uploaded some images for you guys to analyze. I started noticing these flakes a long time ago. Nizoral helped, but didn't stop it completely.

Is it the same with the hair on the sides of the head?

I don't think it usually happens on the sides, but I believe it has happened before. It's mostly just the top of my scalp and the front of my scalp. I also tend to get it around where I part my hair on the top left side of my head. What would it mean if it were happening on the sides too?

Probably you have seborrheic dermatitis, but sebum acumulation on sides is more difficult because this area is in contact some hours a day (mostly during the night) with an absorvent surface as the pillow. Your case can be agree with my explanation theory of the special pattern of common baldness.

Pure jojoba oil as a lotion can be useful for it.

When I look up seborrheic dermatitis, I'm mostly finding images of red or very crusty and yellow scalps. My scalp is white and much healthier looking than these images. It does get oily and I still get these flakes though. Could I have a very mild form of Seborrheic Dermatitis? And what is your theory of the special pattern of common baldness, Armando? That sounds very intriguing!

You could have a mild form of Seborrheic dermatitis.

OTOH I send you a PM with my theory.

Have a nice day

Thanks for the advice guys. I tried using the apple cider vinegar treatment because I happened to have some in my kitchen. It seemed to get rid of all my scalp problems for a wonderful week, but then they returned. So, I did it again and it worked, but this time it took only 2-3 days for the dandruff to return. Is it safe to use apple cider vinegar daily or is it not supposed to be used frequently?

Also, the way these flakes look with hairs sticking out of them just seems peculiar to me. Is it possible these flakes actually pulled hair out of my scalp when they came off? Or do you guys think the hairs sticking out of them are just hairs that were already falling off anyway and just got stuck in the gunk before they could fall off my head?

It looks like the hair stealing flakes have struck again. I'll attach some pics from one I got last night. Sorry if these are gross to look at, I actually find them very fascinating because I've never seen anything else like it.

I had that when I had seborrheic dermatitis. Looked exactly the same. I still have the condition, but it has never progressed to that point of inflammation again since the initial 6-12 months when I was 16 years old.

I had this but even worse.

At the beginning my flakes were dry and white like yours and my scalp was somewhat healthy. But at their worst the flakes became a disgusting greasy greeny brown. Eventually my scalp, mostly on the top was completely covered by those flakes. Felt like my skin was rotting. And yes like you the flakes were going out with hair. I would say the hair are just stucked in the skin that falls off.

I can say I completely healed today but still have two scars from digging flakes on my scalp, I have a concave area on my right temple.

You have sebhoreic dermatitis. You can fight that with keto shampoos. But if you want a cure you will need to find what is startling that inflammation. For me it was diet related, processed food and sugar.

Good luck.

How long did it take to cure once you changed your diet? I do enjoy sugar quite a bit. I wouldn't say I eat a grossly excessive amount, I've maintained the same skinny build my whole life, but I do bake and eat a lot of homemade chocolate chip cookies. It seemed at first that apple cider vinegar and a pyrithione zinc shampoo were helping, but now it seems worse than ever.

Just got this flake like 10 minutes ago. Probably the worst one I've ever had. Quite a frightening amount of hair in it :(

Sorry for the late response my friend, I am not often here.

It's hard to keep track of how much time it took.

The first thing I did was using keto shampoo and creams on the advice of someone, and it got rid of my condition in a month, incredible results, couldn't believe it. But the inflammation was still there and if I stopped the shampoos the dermatitis would automatically cripple back. That's when I changed my diet, I got rid of sugar and most processed food, not completely but reduced it by a great ammount. I would say the inflammation sensation went away pretty quickly, it's hard to pinpoint exactly when I was cured as I was using the shampoo while I changed my diet. But one day after months of the diet change I decided to stop the shampoo to see. And boom, it was gone and it has been two years now I have been sporting a healthy scalp, I am still balding though.

And indeed, vinegar didn't help for me as well. Seems like it would help those with mild conditions but for people like you and I, it is not enough.

Just next time you bind on sugar, try and see if you get inflammation in the scalp. If it does then there is a big chance it is the cause of you misfortune.

In any case jump quickly on the keto shampoos, that dermatitis can damage your scalp pretty bad. Search on the internet which ones to use, if you want I can reference you to which I used.

Good luck.

At this point you need a 2% Keto shampoo, go see a derm and get a prescription
