What Kind Of Hairloss Does This Appear To Be?

I posted this the other day but didn't get many replies.

A little background, I've been losing hair since I was 19, I'm 21 and have been using minoxidil and nizoral for 15 months and finasteride for 9. In this time I have seen my hair get far worse and receding in standard male pattern baldness pattern. However as my hair got worse I began to buzz it with no guard. The first buzz I noticed thin patches all over the back of my head and thought I just gave myself a bad haircut.

However with every haircut past this the same spots were always there, and it even seems Like new ones have appeared. Now I don't think it's alopecia areata because the spots never became slick bald. The sides of my head are even getting much thinner around my ears. Attached are the pictures, the lighting doesn't show it as severe but I believe you guys get the idea.

Loss around the ears and sides is "retrograde alopecia."
Seems like it. Thank you, those areas have been thin for years and it feels sort of reassuring to know what it is. Seems like finasteride and minoxidil do not do much for it. Is it a little daft to hope for regrowth on my crown or temples considering I haven't seen anything all this time on treatment?

Depends on how long you've been on finasteride. I hear people usually give it as much as a year before deciding they want to quit. It doesn't happen overnight.

Yeah I've been on it for 9 months so I've still been hanging in there but I just thought I'd see some kind of regrowth especially from the minoxidil. I've stabilized shedding for the past 2 months, I don't shed virtually anything but my hair got a lot worse before that happened.

I have basically the same pattern but more advanced (much thinner/balded vertex, even thinner at the nape etc.). It sucks man - in my opinion it's the worst type of balding because you not only thin EVERYWHERE, it's not even an even thinning - you have these patches of thinner and thicker areas and it looks horrible and is impossible to style. You at least seem to still have good density in many areas (I don't), so you can probably still style it decently if you grew it out a bit.

Thank you man I feel you on that, this combined with diffuse thinning is a nightmare. The retrograde thinning is super noticeable for me if my hair isn't buzzed down or as you said if it isn't longer to cover it up. whwt are you currently doing for your loss and how long have you taken it?

Currently doing nothing and have basically never done anything. I've been shedding/thinning since 16 years old and I'm 39 now, so it's been a slow burn. The rate of loss seems to have increased the past two years, however, but that may be due to increased concealer use (it binds to the hair and then when I comb through it, it pulls my hair out very easily). I'm between NW2.5-3.0 now, but with a basically bald spot right in the center of my frontal hairline in addition to receding at the temples, along with a huge bald spot (80+% thin) on the crown and the patchy loss we both have on the sides and back on top of that. I did halfheartedly try Rogaine for about 6 weeks but lacked the discipline/opportunity to apply it twice a day. Was considering Finasteride, but afraid of side effects, I may tough it out and see if Brotzu lotion of released in the next 12 months. Good luck to you. It's terrible.
