What steps should I take to keep hair?

Hello. It's been a long time since I have been here.
I am a 55 year old man with most of his hair. However, there is some thinning in the crown area. I fear some in the front has a change in texture. It's graying so I don't know if that's the issue.
What steps should I take to ensure I keep my hair thick and healthy? I do not want to take finasteride because I can't afford the risks I might experience.
Does shampoo that fights against DHT really work? I am currently using rogaine.
I would appreciate some direction.
Thank you.

You've just made so many people jealous.

Grey hair has nothing to do with hair loss, it's genetic/a part of aging and can even start in peoples 20's.

Rogaine will help to regrow dying hair but if you stop using it, it'll fall out again. Shampoo wouldn't be enough or else everyone would have a full head of hair, you would need finasteride or dutasteride to stop losing hair.

You should see a doctor and dermatologist though to make sure you're losing hair due to male pattern baldness and not some kind of diet deficiency.

Welcome back. :)

If there's some thinning on your crown, it'll be an over 99% chance that it's Male Pattern Baldness. Gray hair is largely genetic and is completely unrelated to hair loss. The best shampoos that have an anti DHT effect are those that contain an ingredient called Ketoconazole, but it really won't do a whole lot though.

The best chances of finding out exactly why your hair is thinning is if you go see a hair specialist, particularly a hair transplant surgeon, they'll be able to tell you exactly what's going on. I see that you don't want to take Finasteride; however, that will be the #1 treatment for baldness if you're suffering from it. The chances of getting side effects from the treatment is very minimal and happens roughly in around 2% of cases, and will subside once the drug is discontinued.

Rogaine will help keep hair that is being killed off by DHT last much longer if you respond well to it. Eventually though, DHT will kill the hair if the androgen doesn't get inhibited through treatment.

..."however it does change your whole hormone profile, essentially feminising it somewhat"

:/

really sucks that there is no better option today than a hormone altering drug.
