Aveda Men's Modeling Clay is my go to. helps thicken up a little and gives a non-greasy matte finish. Also try Uppercut Matt Clay. this stuff is not easy to wash out but it thickens and provides insane hold.

Volumizing hair spray. In the uk it can be very windy and gel just doesnt hold my hair together. Doesnt make my hair oily either, tends to actualy make it look a little dryer. Also, just a personal opinnion, but i think gels can possibly (not saying it does) cause hairlos because its chemicals applied directly to the scalp (unlike hairspray). Infact, I beleave it kickstarted my hairloss becuase my hairloss started a few months after i started abusing my hair with gel. There would be days where I havent washed the gel off propely and my scalp would be stinging (doesnt happen now because i dont use gel), so just be careful.

You should use something that does not show the scalp by making the hair look wet.
