When Do You See Results From Finasteride?

So I started finasteride about two months ago, for the first 2-3 weeks I took 0.5 mg every other day, after that I took 0.5 mg every day; and I will be continuing. I noticed a pretty mild increase in shedding that seems to have subsided for the most part. When can I expect to accurately evaluate the results of the drug?

Everyone seems to react or not react to the drug differently so each case is different.
I would up the dose to the recommended 1mg a day and reassess after a solid year.

I thought the large scale study had a 80% maintenance success rate, and close to 50% saw some kind of regrowth. And yes that was on 1 mg, but I thought a more recent study determined that lower doses of the drug basically block the same percentage of DHT compared to 1 mg.

I'm disabled, but my caregiver has said she is seeing very tiny hairs in the temple region. On Friday I'm getting a scalp camera and a scalp wash so I'll be able to see you for sure. The camera I had about two months ago showed I had a lot of the vellus hairs in the temples. Of course I am also using liquid minoxidil on the hairline as well

LOL the study is full of BS, you only need to take a look at these forums to see for yourself. 60% will slow or maintain at best and about 30% will see some minor regrowth. That isn't a completely accurate representation but its the odds in which you read about here. Its unlikely you will experience any regrowth but maintenance combined with a hair transplant is ideally what you could hope to get. Many dont even respond to finasteride, i didn't and alot of others didn't either. Im in no means discouraging you, im just giving you a realistic expectation. I do hope you get what you want from it though, im keeping my fingers crossed for all of us lol.

Usually around 6-12 months. Personally, I've been on the drug for close to 2 years at around 5-6 months I started to notice that my hair was becoming easier and easier to style.

Yes but don't you think the people that go to their doctor saying I am worried about hair loss just from looking in a mirror, and then they have success… Why would they bother coming to forums such as this? Not very many people browse these websites in comparison to the sheer amount of people that are on the drug. It would not do as well as it does if it didn't show real results. You have no real evidence that that study is "BS" only anecdotes from a form that is likely full of people that are too scared to take the drug because they've read too much online, and/or people that were not successful with the drug.

Or do you actually have evidence other than your own personal experience and a few naysayers that agree with you?

I have lurked on these kind of websites quite a bit, and I have seen many success stories.

Would you attribute that to thicker hair, did you notice any regrowth?

.

I used to think that too, but look at it like this, Dutasteride is supposedly better for hairloss than finasteride, few doctors would prescribe it for that reason. Most of those people will flock to these sort of forums, find out places where they can buy online and then a few months later they are back crying about how it destroyed their hair.. im not saying nobody has had success with dutasteride but its very few that do. Its the same with finasteride, granted a good number of people dont come to these sites and still get on finasteride but whos to say that they have had success?
Look Dogma im not trying to divert you from using it or saying you wont have success but my dermatologist told me himself that he has had very few people that have used finasteride and had success. Its actually made my hairloss worse. What im trying to say is dont expect anything from finasteride, if you get results thats great but dont build yourself up for something that may come crashing down in the end. I thought at best it would slow my loss, thats a realistic expectation but all i got was an agressive increase of shedding on my hairline...and im still on finasteride!! Not sure why though. I really do hope ýou have success, but heed my warning please.

EDIT: I wanted to add one more thing, you think these people adversely affected make this stuff up? I do have evidence from my experience which ill link you to:

This was the post from when i first started propecia, go down to the end of the first page and you'll see what a month and a half done to my hairline. Im almost 9 months in now so you can only imagine how much worse it is now... it can and does happen more frequently that people care to admit. I'll never touch dutasteride honestly. Im tempted to try estradiol to get be back to baseline so i can drop this crap.

I had some thickening at my hair line; my hair loss was very minor to begin with.

10 months and my crown is doing better but my hairline continues to thin? Granted, when I started, I already had a lot of whispy male pattern baldness-hairs on the hairline that may be too weak to save. So I'm hoping that they maybe shed and new stronger ones come back, but it's looking doubtful :(.

Jealous of these guys who get awesome regrowth from finasteride.

I started seeing great results after 4 months. Hair thicker and looking better too at 6 months. I only have maybe 10 or 20 hairs fall out per day now, compared to 70-130 a day before the 4th month.
Nizoral 3-4 times a week is helping allot too.

People expressing their concerns on the internet is not a powerful statistic. People often are on the internet to complain so the sample is already biased

I'm on my second run with finasteride as diffuse thinner. I'm a week into month 5 now. First 2 months was lots of shedding and I noticed thickening around month 4. Also using nizoral shampoo 3x a week.

Response has been good so far. Want to see where things around 1 year mark and then I'll go for dutasteride or add minoxidil if I think I can still improve.

Comparing controlled studies to a personal estimate (emotional guesses) on some online forum... cmon @AnxiousAndy , I thought you are smarter than that...

If you want to maximize your chances you should:
Take the recomended dosage of 1mg Finasteride/day
Add Minoxidil to your regimen

You cant expect any noticable difference the first 4 months, it takes time for your hair to regrow once it has shedded (around 100 days), since you dont shed all your hair at once although medication like Minoxidil speeds it up you can count on regular sheddings during a long time, this also makes it difficult to notice a big difference the first year.

I have been on Minoxidil and Finasteride for 9-10 months now and i can start to see an improved density, but i am in my third noticable shedding period so it seems to me that shedding occurs more or less every third month (but this is my personal reaction and every person reacts differently to the drugs).

Just keep up the medication, dont try to increase or decrease the recommended dosage is there for a reason, its what has helped most people at the trials with the mininum amount of side effects.
