I've just started finasteride. and I'm using Nizoral 2 times a week along with head and shoulders 2 times a day. Is it possible that I'm washing my hair too much? How often do most of you guys on this site do it? :)

I wash my hair once a day.

My hair is very fine and reacts very poorly to the natural oils of my scalp.

I was intrigued by your question and did a little searching, it seems that figuring out how often to wash your hair is a complicated business.

If you've got time take a look at the link below, if offers very detailed advice on figuring out how often to wash (or not wash) your hair.

Just one more, this one covers the different chemicals that are in different shampoos for different hair types.

"Sebaceous glands are responsible for secreting sebum, the natural oils that moisturize and waterproof your skin and hair."

WRONG. As was proved by Dr. Albert M. Kligman MD PhD, sebum is almost completely useless as a moisturizing agent. In an actual early experiment he did, he had to add TEN TIMES the normal amount of sebum that appears on oily areas like the face, just to have a relatively noticeable increase in moisture content.

"Some advise against frequent shampooing, pointing out it leads to overproduction of sebum to compensate for its constant removal [source: Aubrey]."

WRONG. Kligman and colleagues first proved way back in 1958 that washing the scalp/skin has no effect on the production of sebum, and it's been demonstrated by others, too. Such is the tenacity of that idea (referred to as the "feedback theory"), it's almost impossible to get people to stop believing it. (See the last item in my signature below.)

When you speak of Dr Kligman, I presume you are talking about the one mentioned in this article.

You are correct! That's the very same Albert M. Kligman, and I didn't know until this very moment that he had died a year ago! :sobbing:

He seems like a very interesting man, one who pursued science to it's limit.

Do you happen to have a link to those studies, I'd love to read them for myself.

Sorry, I don't have any links to either of those two studies, just paper copies of them from a medical library.

i shampoo mine one every three days (or once every 2 days if i've gotten sweaty etc).
shampooing it every day would just make my hair very brittle and dry.

i have to do it in the morning to make my hair settle down after washing.

but I will say if you think it will grow any hair back by shampooing less often, you will likely be sorely disappointed.

I understand that it will not promote/stimulate growth washing hair more often but will it provide better more natural conditions for the hair to grow?

I used to wash my hair once a day but since I've been on here I notice my head starts to itch when I haven't washed it twice a day and from my understanding an itchy scalp is bad?

Does sebum cause increased hairloss? I seem to remember something about it causing build up of DHT on the scalp. One thing I have noticed is that since i've been on finasteride is that my face is A LOT less greasier and I have less spots. I also have drier skin in a few places.
