Where to get Legitimate Finasteride (Propecia) with Prescription in UK?

I don't mean off some dodgy "online pharmacy" that breaks the law, but legitimately, above board, recognised by your GP, proper legal prescription, etc. Thanks lads - the anecdotes and information will be very helpful to me.

you know that wherever you get finasteride from, your GP won't 'recognise' it. He's the problem, not the finasteride source

as I said in the other thread: Dr. Ashcroft or ukfinasteride.info -neither are dodgy online pharmacies and both are completely legitimate and legal prescriptions by genuine British doctors

Otherwise get a prescription from your GP or Derm for either Propecia or Finasteride 5mg (not likely, considering your GP)

The other legit way is to go to Boots and sign up for their hairloss programme where I believe they'll prescribe you Propecia (and probably try to sell you minoxidil and other stuff), but this is likely the most expensive way.

There are no other ways, that I know of

you could speak to Irishfella - he said he managed to get his Proscar from a walk-in clinic

NHS in the UK is the same as the HSE in Ireland, the public health board. Figuratively tell your GP to **** off, he doesn't need to know that you are taking finasteride the same way my GP doesn't need to know and if he some how found out I'd tell him it's none of his business, if he had a problem I'd get a copy of my medical history and find a new GP. You mention that you want to get monitored, Kirby, pal, it costs €35 for blood tests in the walk in clinic I went too (excluding STI tests) you could easily find a clinic, tell them you are on finasteride and you would like to get a full blood count, thyroid, liver etc.

@QC I emailed Dr A as soon as you provided his details but no response yet (understandable if he's a GP). Was on the Boots programme, couldn't afford it any longer, it was all pressure selling with no medical knowledge/supervision. And no GP involvement, so risky.

@IF I thought Ireland had the same healthcare set up as America?! Unfortunately it is impossible for me to get blood tests paid for out of pocket on the NHS, and we don't have those sort of walk in clinics here.

I know I could change my GP surgery but I might end up with a GP who is just as anti finasteride, and they might not 'believe in' my disability (diagnosed in 1994!) which was a major problem I've had with some GPs in the past.

is your disability a mental or physical one? I can't beleive that doctors wouldn't believe in it if you have been diagnosed

You guys that think your gp doesn't need to know you're on finasteride are mistaken. If he ever decides to do a PSA test on you, the results will be skewed because of finasteride and at that point you will have no choice but to admit finasteride use.

This may not be an issue for younger guys, but once you reach a certain age these tests are inevitable. You should always disclose the meds your are on to your doctor. To not do so is foolish.

It's not so much previous GPs didn't believe I have it, it's more they didn't believe it's a medically valid condition, something like that. (Even though the WHO do.) A local support group once told me that happens with some GPs. I was very satisfied with my current GP, until last Friday, because he seems to have expertise about the condition!

@ beaner that's exactly why I want to inform a GP, it's just sensible. Particularly when the dermatologist said, you need your GP to get you blood tests. And I take three other prescriptions anyway.

I'm curious what it is. Can you PM me? You don't have to if you don't feel comfortable - I just wondered what it is that some doctors won't recognise

I don't want to share what it is, but there are plenty of conditions/disabilities that odd GPs either don't "believe in" or are dead ignorant about. So if I as a patient need access to services that can help, but the GP won't refer you to them because he/she doesn't "believe in" that condition (despite the World Health Organisation recognising it), you're stuffed.

I am in th UK and I get a perscription from my local GP for 5mg generic which I have to split into fifths. It costs me £5 for 30 tablets which when split gives me 5 month supply. Dr Ashcroft has his place if you dont want to go to your GP but your paying a crazy amount, around £100 for 8 months supply!!

Rj2000, your GP was 100% OK with that? Did you have to 'bribe' him via the private consultation route?

Kirby I told you earlier in this thread the only ways to get legitimate finasteride. I doubt anyone else knows of any other (legit) sources

as for the blood tests, I can't help you with that, but I don't think it's vitally important. I've been on finasteride for 5 years and I only recently had my first LFT which came back fine.

Otherwise go private to have the test done - many private clincis do it. once a year is more than adequate, can you afford that?. Or change your GP

Sorry for late reply. I had an itchy scalp for around 2 years which was driving me mad, had tests but they all came up negative. I did some research and found that male pattern baldness can cause an itchy scalp so let my GP know what I had researched. He asked me to come back in a week and in that time he did some research and said he was happy to give it a go. I asked for generic to save me some money and he agreed to do that. My pack of tablets just has a sticker on to say take a fifth of one tablet daily.

I guess that is slightly different than other peoples situation. I did point out i was concerned about my male pattern baldness and he said for the male pattern baldness alone the generic would help. I think he would have give me a prescription for for generic just for the male pattern baldness.
