Which Operating System do you use? What do you like about it? Why? What do you dislike about it? Why?

I use a GNU/Linux OS and I like that it is reliable, secure, and built entirely out of free software. I also have a collection of development tools that no proprietary OS could match. What I don't like is the influx of free software coded in languages such as Java, which produce memory hogging, clunky apps when compared with C.

What kind of development tools you got?

It's all about RAD (Rapid Application Development), who cares if the programs are bloated?? Memory and CPU cycles are cheap.

I personally don't like Java, but if I was a manager of a big company I would prefer to work with Java. Businesses prefer Java and .net for a reason. There is no need to reinvent the wheel, they have a large collection of "standardised" libraries. C/C++ are minefields and take much longer to write the same program.

PS: I'm not gonna vote, because I use linux and XP. I like both equally...

Java is garbage. If you want something the you can develop with quick, use Python (or Perl, or Ruby, or Lisp, etc.). And if you need performance use C/C++. The reason big companies use Java and .Net is because they are run by Pointy Haired MBA type guys who are swayed by all the marketing Sun and M$ put into their garbage platforms. Both completely suck and are primarily designed to be used by ill-prepared comp sci graduates who were too dumb to wrap their heads around pointers or memory management, so need their hand held while they code business apps and crappy web widgets in Java.

You are passionate about your software, aren't you???

Here is the thing. In the real world, managers, programmers, etc don't give a f*ck about the platform. All they care about is productivity and cost. I don't know much about Python, but if python can provide the same libraries as Java and .net then it's a third option...

I also don't agree with your views on memory management. Software should be layered, and higher layers shouldn't need access to memory.

Have to agree totally here, more marketing means more non-tech Pointy Haired MBA types buy into it.

Java is not total crap but .net is the worst of the worst that M$ has ever
put out.

On a daily basis I use XP, Win2K, Vista, and various flavors of linux. All are
appropriate and useful depending on what the need is. None of them are as
bad or as good as everyone says :)

I've switched over to Mac OS X Leopard in 2007 and haven't looked back since. Easily the best consumer desktop OS, IMO.

I'm a huge XP guru; everyone comes to me to fix their Windows problems. Hey, I can't complain, it's easy money :innocent:

I still use XP for some weird programs that I use for Search Engine Optimization... but I run XP inside of OS X, so its a non-issue.

As for Vista, it sucks. Stick with XP, or wait until Windows 7. Heck, even beta builds of Windows 7 run better than Vista.

I use Vista. It's fine but why does Microsoft assume I'm a moron? I really AM sure I want to change update settings/install an app/turn my firewall off etc etc.

I have thought about setting up Linux on a partition just to try it out. It's the 'firefox' of OS's I believe. Havn't got round to doing it though...

They assume that because most of their users are. (And the fact that you're asking the question indicates you probably aren't one of them.)

Try looking into getting yourself a real operating system. I highly recomend GNU/Linux.

+1 on having XP... it's always nice having XP kicking around. I've got a license key for XP, so I installed a version of "TinyXP" on my MacBook... it only uses about 350mb of hard drive space, and uses about 40mb of RAM when running. Very nice.

There's also version of XP that can run from a USB stick. Pretty neat and handy.

I just think Vista is unnecessarily big and bloated. Granted, OS X isn't the leanest OS out there, but the user experience and availability of software is awesome. I loooove Photoshop in OS X.
