Why am I losing hair on 0.5 dutasteride EOD?

I am pretty much on the strongest medication for hair loss, and at the age of only 23 and my hair appears worse then what it started off. I have been on the drug now for over a year. There has been the odd week in which I've skipped, but nothing severe. My diffuse pattern has gotten worse.

Is this just a shed? Bear in mind I haven't noticed any loss of hairs. Or do I need to up the dose considering how aggressive the male pattern baldness gene is within my family history?

What can I do to save my hair? I am still so young and none of treatments are working.

This was my hair a few months ago.

Yes, but I had it quite short prior to this and my hair was a higher density. I am still unsure what do regarding my regime?

Some people are irresistant to treatment from finasteride/dutasteride. You probably have super sensitive follicles and even crushing all your DHT won't save them. It happens, it sucks.

No.

finasteride is a selective inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase type II. It will suppress DHT in your scalp area between ~30-40% (studies vary) while dutasteride is an inhibit of 5-alpha reductase type I AND II and will suppress scalp DHT to a much greater extent (~55-70%).

Dutasteride is the strongest drug we have for stopping hairloss currently approved by the FDA. Greatest efficacy was shown at 2.5 mg (5 pills) but I would talk to your doctor before you think of changing treatments.

There's some more experimental stuff going on around these forums (see RU58841) but take extreme care before trying research chemicals. You only have one body in this life, take care of it!

Do you still get an itch or tingling sensation after starting dutasteride? I would add minoxidil to the regime also. The other option is increase dutasteride dose to ED for 6 months if affordable. Or take finasteride for the days off dutasteride.

Okay thanks for your help. Considering how aggressive my hair loss and considering my family history, I will up my dose to 0.5 every day and then evaluate my situation after another six months. RU58841 seems a hassle to get hold off, expensive and confusing how to make. So I will leave that as a last resort.

I don't get much of an itch no, if it is it's across my scalp rather than a certain area. I would add minoxidil but am anxious about the aging side effects (wrinkles, blackness under eyes, bloated face etc.) But thanks for your help.

Did you drop finasteride for dutasteride?

Yes, because finasteride seemed to make the issue worse, but it may have possible been in the process of shedding like my hair is now. However my hair loss is so aggressive and my family history proves it. That is why I am on 0.5mg of dutasteride.

I'm on the same boat as you. I've been on Propecia (finasteride 1mg) for over 12 years, and it had help keep my hair or at least I'm not completely bald by now. However, I've noticed my hair getting thinner than before, and the MBP problem started to show. So, I added dutasteride 0.5mg daily along with finasteride 3 months ago. '

It's been 3 months now, the problem seem worse. How could it be! I still keep taking finasteride...

I know my body is getting reaction from dutasteride, so the drug is doing something (my libilo is getting higher, a few headaches every now and then, etc, nothing major)

I hope this is just the initial shedding phrase...

I am in the same boat as you- early/mid 20s. Almost 6 months into dutasteride (I also use RU58841 and minoxidil) and my hair is worse than ever. Genetics are strong man. Try to look on the bright side though, you have double the hair I have so it could be worse

How long were you on JUST finasteride, and how long have you been on JUST dutasteride? You should also NOT drop one medication cold turkey. Either take both, or slooooowly ween yourself off the one you want to stop.

I have upped my dose to 0.5mg every day now as the excessive thinning is knocking my confidence down full on. Will keep everyone updated.

Hair still appears to have low density. Is this just a shedding phase? I have been on the drug for over a year. Doctors are useless at investigating the issue.
