Why even get on finasteride?

Hi all, I was doing some thinking and I was on Propecia for 2 mts, stopped cause of the price, didn't have any side effects or anything when I was on it and didn't notice any accelerated loss after I stopped and I've been off it since April but recently I've noticed my hairline getting worse on the right side so I got on Proscar and I cut it into fourths and I just got done with my first full pill.
However I was doing some thinking about it and I thought why even get on finasteride in the first place? From everything I've read on here it loses it's effectiveness after what, 2 yrs? So yeah you'll keep what you have now for only 2 yrs but once the drug starts wearing off you'll go thru massive loss of what you have kept for the 2 yrs you were on it and you'd have to go thru all the trama of losing all of this hair you've maintained while on finasteride for 2 yrs. If it worked forever I'd stay on it without second thought for the rest of my life, but why invest all this money and emotions and stuff into something that only works for like 2 yrs then what are you supposed to do? I hope Im totally wrong about this but from all I've seen it seems like this is how it goes, anyone with any thoughts and opinions?

Merck did a 5 year study on Propecia and show that after the 5 year most men maintain the hair they have.

From what I understand, a half dose (.5mg finasteride) is good for 3 years and a full dose (1.mg finasteride) is good for another 5 years after. Thats 8 years! Hopefully in 8 years from now, there will be a better cure?

Ahhh No!! nobody ever told me this!!!

How can this be right? Surely not. How do movie stars and rock stars keep their hair then?

IS THE TRUTH THAT YOU MIGHT AS WELL GO FOR COSMETIC SURGERY BECAUSE THAT'S THE ONLY PERMANENT SOLUTION?

in which case - topical and medicinal treatments are a WASTE OF MONEY and TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

Finasteride doesn't ever lose its effectiveness. Your body's natural balding process just dampens finasteride's effects on hair. Without finasteride, you would be much worse in any case.

Also, nowhere is it written in stone that you're gonna keep your hair for 3-5 years. For some people, finasteride works much longer, and for others, it doesn't work at all. For the overwhelming majority, the 5-year Propecia clinical trials showed that finasteride at least maintains hair counts after five years, with a peak at about the second year mark.

Well, I guess 5 years is much better then 2 years. In 5 years I'll be 29 and I've thought about getting hair restoration to fill in the thinning spots around my hairline on the right side, but my dermatologist told me to wait at least until I'm 30 before I do that so if the finasteride can carry me thru until I'm 29 I'd be at the right age to try something like that, maybe by then Avodart will be more proven or something else will finally be available. I'm currently on Proscar and Nizoral 1%, I'd like to try to avoid minoxidil as long as possible. I've been seriously thinking about going to the 2% Nizoral and adding Revivogen and L-lyseine too.

Didn't the 10 year finasteride study show that most people who responded to the treatment still had more hair than they started with?

I heard that the sooner you start propecia or proscar. The better change to keep your hair for a very long time.

Chris,

Where the hell did you get the idea that Propecia stops working after 2 years... or 5 years... or whenever?!

Studies show improvement even after 5 years of use! I don't even know of any studies going beyond that time frame and where it would claim that Propecia stops working at any peticular point?!

I suspect you are "over-thinking" and therefore you are now "freaking out" a little too much. Take a deep breath and be patient!

You will be maintaining your hair count after 5 years instead of still growing more of it because of course by that time you won't be able to grow more hair than you originally had in the first place!

Cheers.

I agree with you de Gaulle. All the studies show that most people that stay on propecia for more than 5 years loss hair or gain hair. The just seem to maintain the hair you have at the 5 year. The person that started this post is thinking to much about it.

No, it's not that the person who started this post is thinking way too much about it, however if I'm going to put all the money and everything else into it for the next few yrs of course Im going to read much about it as possible all the pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages, successes and failures and I've lurked here for quite awhile and I've seen alot more cons and bad things bout finasteride then good things and I've read a few times recently how ppl have expierenced loss of effectiveness after the 2 yr mark or there abouts, come to think of it I've never seen anyone post about having very long term success with finasteride, hopefully I will though, hence the post. As I said I just want to educate myself as much as possible in every possible way about finasteride because I take my loss and thinning very seriously and I just want to make the best decision for me and my hair even though there's not alot to choose from in ths battle unfortunatly.

Reason you have seen more "cons & bad things" here than positive things:

- People complain more than they compliment.

I don't go around telling everybody how happy I am.. But I usually do my best to let them know if I'm pissed off and unhappy!

Stinkin' human nature I s'pose ?!

There are a couple of people on here at had success over 2 years. Second a lot of people he trys something for a couple of months and then move on to something else. Which means they don't give it a chance to let it work. Third, the drug itself is still new so your not going to see alot of people using it for long time. Most of the people here is on it for one year or less. In the next 5 years we will see people give there thoughts on the drug when there has been using it for 5 years.

Yeah that's true bout the can't really say about long term effects because it hasn't been around that long, was hoping I'd find someone on here who's been on it about 5 yrs or so with good results to give me some inspiration I guess.
I was doing some searching just now and found this, but I've never heard of it before-

Anyone had decent results with Revivogen?

Graph should answer your question. Which team would you rather be on? The green team or the darkblue team?
