Why is it that most people aren't aware that there is an approved treatment that actually works for hair loss? A lot of people still seem to think that no solution for hair loss exists apart from a hair transplant. I mean I wasn't aware of finasteride until out of desperation for a solution I started to do internet research and came across articles about finasteride and forums like this. I bet a lot of people here were the same.

I feel like a lot of people are in denial about their hair loss for years. And the same people probably have non-baldies telling them "You're not balding don't worry." Then it gets to the point were it is far too gone and they shave it off.

This is exactly what my family told me. Went to dermatologist and she took one look and prescribed finasteride

Yeah a little from A and a little from B. Some dont notice, some dont care, some dont want to a drug for life. Its not like finasteride is a magic pill there are plenty of risks and options to weigh before you try that. A lot of guys dont want to take a drug forever and the health risks, costs that come with that. Its not a wrong decision because people here think its dumb to do

I think a lot of people know about it, but its also because a lot of people will see the nightmare stories the first time they look it up and get spooked. I remember a year ago when I first started noticing my male pattern baldness, I said "I'm never taking propecia". Now its to the point where it's a lot worse and I'm not so ignorant about the drug.

I agree that many people lack the ability to think critically, and lack it most when it's most needed, and so they don't do research. And some people don't really use the internet that much. I have a friend who has been losing his hair for a year or so and he doesn't really use the internet so I think he will be one of the ones who never learns about finasteride and instead chooses to let nature take its nasty course, thinking there's no other option. I have another friend who has always used the internet a lot and he started receding years ago and his recession hasn't gotten any worse so I believe he did research online and took action.

Today I watched the MTV documentary on hair loss, MTV True Life: I'm Losing My Hair, and there was not one mention of finasteride. Instead it left people with the impression that the only solution to hair loss is a hair transplant. But I guess it was made to entertain and not to educate. There was a scene where a balding guy was playing video games with his friends and his mother walked in and said she heard from someone that hair loss is caused by fungus. Yes, fungus. He went to a doctor and the doctor ran some tests and agreed that it was fungus that was causing his hair loss and told him that his hair would grow back if he quit drinking and ate only organic foods. So the guy gave up drinking and only ate organic food for 3 months which was really hard for him to do. He completely altered the way he lived his life based on what the doctor told him, and of course it made no difference so in the end he just resorted to getting a hair transplant. I can only imagine the responses someone would get on these forums if they claimed that hair loss is caused by fungus. And this came from a medical professional.

Thank God for these forums. If nothing else they educate people.

The answer is because as far as I know that was very little marketing for the drug in the general public, and there still isn't much. It gets no TV commercials like v**** and most doctors are clueless.

I agree with the guy who said lots of people don't think critically, and just won't do the homework themselves. Since there are people going bald around them and others telling them to suck it up I assume they pretend to "go with the flow" while most are probably dying by each falling hair strand.

As for the rest of us, it isn't easy to recommend finasteride. You don't walk up to balding dudes and just recommend them to use finasteride. It's just awkward and I wouldn't expect a positive response to it. Also, I hide the fact that I use finasteride and I try to stay as quite as possible.

Possibly true and I think it's also to do with mental laziness. People don't want to think critically; If something is perceived as a truth by the vast majority they don't bother to question it.

About Finasteride, this drug is not even discussed in my medical college till graduation.

When asked what is Finasteride, almost 80 percent first answer is in Benign hypertrophy of Prostate, and stop there.
Only girls tell it is used in hairloss(showing interest),as hair loss is rare below 30 here, almost rare percentage of boys were interested in this drug knowledge.

In my medical college, out of 700 students, only 5/6 boys were bald at that time.

I don't understand how in the age of Google, anyone concerned with hairloss can't find Propecia instantly. As soon as I realized I had male pattern baldness I googled 'treating hairloss' and found Propecia and Minoxidil were the only real options within minutes.

Yeah but that's kind of the point - most people arn't aware of finasteride until they start researching info about hair loss. The population in general still seems to think that no such treatment for hair loss exists.

Only somewhat true. Most men will have some hair loss by late twenties, you won't have your teenager hair by that time, at least most won't. They won't be bald visually just yet but the process could already be in progress for a couple years. It's sad cause this is the best time to hit it with meds.

Same with me. I told a guy who'd been bald the last 10 years about finasteride and minoxidil and he'd never heard of them!

There is still a lot of bad information on male pattern baldness simply because even though a few basic treatments exist none of them are perfect. There are tons unknowns still about male pattern baldness that really leads to all the snake oils and misinformation its just filling the huge holes in current medical knowledge. You could ask hundreds of questions about male pattern baldness or hormones or DHT that have no answers.
Propecia while the best treatment still isnt really perfect at stopping it many agree it usually slows it down more than stop it so a lot of guys might say why bother?

The sides and horror stories on the internet probably scare a large number of people away.

I read a few and said **** it ill just shave my head. Then I started losing more and decided to take a longer look at finasteride
