Why is the recommended finasteride dosage for treating BPH 5 mg?

But if 0.1 mg and 1mg or 2.5 block almost the same DHT amount, why people tend to get sides or to intensify sides when upping dosages.

It certainly because finasteride blocks others enzymes on our body?

This is one that measures scalp DHT and Serum DHT.

This is worth remembering.

A dose of 0.05 mg/day is enough to fully inhibit scalp DHT to the best of finasteride's ability, while not fully inhibiting serum DHT, which we don't want to fully inhibit.

That means finasteride inhibits skin DHT before serum DHT, and that a dose of less than 0.05 mg/day is enough to fully inhibit scalp DHT. I wish we knew the answer.

What the numbers say:
0.01 mg/day yields a 15% reduction in scalp DHT out of a possible 60%, or 25% of the job. It yields a ~3% reduction in serum DHT out of a possible 70%, so ~4% of the job.
0.05 mg/day does 100% of the work on the scalp, and 50/70 or 71% of the work on the blood.
0.20 mg/day does 100% of the possible work on both the scalp and the blood, both of them are saturated with finasteride which is then far in excess of the effective dose.

Based on these numbers, the suggested performance of 0.04 mg/daily of finasteride is 100% efficiency in the scalp, and 16% efficiency in the blood. At 0.05 mg/day, you have 100% efficiency in the scalp and 71% in the blood, and at 0.06 mg/day you have 100% efficiency in both the scalp and the blood, in other words 60% reduction in the scalp and 70% reduction in the serum.

It's surprising, and I wish we had more results, but 0.03 mg/day of finasteride should be safe. Your scalp DHT will be reduced by 45% (so it's a weaker drug), and your serum DHT will be reduced by ~10%, so you'll have ~7x fewer side effects than regular full-dose finasteride while having most of the effectiveness.

I suspect the difference in side effects between 1.0 mg and 1.25 mg daily or whatever is mostly psychosomatic.

Yeah, but one issue is going below .25mg is awful hard to do short of trying to weight powder and dissolve in some solution. In an ideal world there would be light/medium/strong propecia sizes and light would be like .2 or less so you could chop that into 4 pieces and get micro doses. They almost approved it at .2 and from the charts lower is really better from a safety stand point even getting good local scalp DHT inhibition levels.
I always wanted to take lower then .25mg a day but its too hard to do. If I took finasteride I would definitely go .25mg a day verses the normal dose.

It takes five minutes to crush a finasteride pill and dissolve it in a solution.

Because I had neglected to update it, thank you for reminding me. I also updated my signature.

Anyhow, if someone wants to try this, finasteride is lipophilic, which means it can dissolve in fats and oils.
http://www.extremepeptides.com/blog/finasteride-part-2/

1) Crush ~7.5 mg of finasteride into a fine powder, really fine, as fine a spossible;
2) Dissolve it very carefully in a little bit of oil, using a spoon or something to mix it well;
3) get 750 ml of an oil (e.g. pumpkin seed oil, olive oil, etc) , which is the standard bottle size, and dissolve it fully, mix and shake well.
4) Have a teaspoon a day. This gives you a supply of 150 days.
5) If you do 10mg of finasteride in 1 litre of oil, you have a supply for 200 days.

That is the minimum demonstrated effective dose: 0.05 mg daily, for which you have the same scalp inhibition but serum DHT levels are reduced by 50% rather than 70%. The same source material shows no benefit to 0.01 mg daily, with no experimentation being done on 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 mg daily.

See this post on the last page, apparently finasteride is also soluble in ethanol.
