Wondering Whether Minoxidil Can Make Hairloss Worse?

I am in a pickle about minoxidil. I am a Norwood 2.5 with no diffuse hair loss and recently started using minoxidil. I became concerned about seeing two hairs shed. Big long ones. I have never been a shedder. Never during my extremely slow male pattern baldness process, nor when using finasteride (which I am still on at age 37 after 16 years constant use).

I have seen people on here express distress over shedding from minoxidil. So I am freaked out about making things worse. I stopped using it after a week over that concern.

So I am interested in a tally of use. How many people have used it without it making hairloss and shedding worse? How many people have used it and think it made their hair loss worse?

Shedding of hairs is not really something to worry about if you don't see any cosmetic differences. I have been on the big3 for almost a year now and I had multiple shed periods, and I never seen any significant changes on my head. My hair even thickened up as expected from using the meds even though I was shedding like crazy at some moments.

Do you experience any thinning in the frontal zone? Or are you considered a NW2.5 with still thick hair in front? If the latter case, I would not bother using minoxidil since it will probably don't do much. You sound like an ideal hair transplant candidate.

How long did the initial shed last for and how bad was it?

Shed lasted for about 3-4 weeks. It was pretty awful. My hair was buzzed down back then which made it even worse. I wore a cap during the time being to hide it. But after that hair improved

I have been on 10%minoxidil for 2 month's today, I shedded week 2 to 6, as of week 6 until now I can see growth in the areas where I lost hair.

Just stick to the 2 times a day instructions , sleep 7-8 hours per night and you will most likely see progress after a few months.

I am not quite sure what you mean. Why is that the case? I have receded at the temples. One is getting closer to a NW3 and there is no miniaturisation in front. The other is NW2 and there does seem to be some shorter hairs in front although if its still receding sh*t its going incredibly slow, as in 15 years of slow. Once you do hit the hairline it is dense and thick.

OK so I have started back on minoxidil. Going to start giving it another crack. I might have been paranoid since only a couple of hairs came out. Still interested to hear of the experience of others, both short and long term.

For me, it only shed ONE TIME, in DECADES of use.

But, Minoxidil did NOT stop my baldness from getting worse.

It DID SLOW it down however.

@rclark how long into your use did the shed start?

I used it at a very young age (when it first came out as 2% only... (Yes, I'm old enough to be most
people's father, sad..))...

It regrew ALL of my hairline back. But here's what's different about that versus what's out today.

1. It was prescribed by a doctor, and wasn't generic. It was very HIGH quality.

2. I'm a very GOOD responder to Minoxidil. Not so good that it stopped me from going bald, but I regained all
of my hairline (Definitely between Norwood two and three in my early twenties, started balding at 19). Visibly balding
at 21).

@rclark Im a bit confused as you said it didnt stop you going bald but you said it regrew your hairline. So do you mean that your hairline regrew and remained as a NW2 and the back of your head went bald?
