Worse before Success??

Out of the people who have experienced success here, did your condition get worse before you began noticing results? I'm 44 days into the Big 3, but have been on minoxidil for 3+ months. Over the last month my thinning in my crown/vertex has become significantly more noticeable. My mid scalp and temples are also looking worse. I'm hoping this is a sign that the meds are working and I'm responding. I'm trying to keep my cool and just push on. I do have a good amount of vellus hairs on my temples. Just want to know if the majority of the successes have seen their condition get worse before things started to turn around?

I'm in the same situation as you are... i can see I have a few new hairs growing on my hairline, but overall my hair feels thinner. I'm about 3.5 half month into minoxidil treatment...

my shedding really didn't get noticeable until I began taking finasteride. I don't sit and count the hairs every day, but I am noticing much more hairs all over the place. Most of the hairs are very short hairs about an inch long while the rest of my hair is around 3 inches. I'm just going to try and stick with the positive attitude that this means that I'm responding to the treatments and things will get better. I'll just have to wait and see.......

i can't answer your question, but don't you just hate the anxiety of wondering what is going to happen?? -- it'd be great to see into the future for some reassurance or whatnot, but not knowing is a daunting feeling.

from what I've read a good percentage of people experience periods of shedding. by taking meds you've basically sync'd all your follicles to the same schedule and you're just noticing it because they all shed at the same time now.

lost significant amount from the crown in a large, diffused pattern during first 1-2 months on finasteride.

lost a pretty serious chunk from the temples about 3 weeks into starting minoxidil.

all grew back thicker.

Yep, I got a lot worse, look at my pics from baseline, two months into finasteride, I was almost a NW4, now I'm a thick NW2 a year later.. :D

To be honest, in many cases of success (especially due to minoxidil regrowth) i couldn't see any worsening before the thicker hairs start to kick in. But i guess it's different for everybody.

What would happen to someone who say have pretty much a full thick head of hair began taking finasteride would the shedding (if it happened to the user) be very noticeable?

Don't know, it depends on what your definition of noticable is. I would say right now for me I haved thinned out badly everywhere but I don't think it is noticable and it has almost 3 months now, basically a baby step. It's funny, I am more afraid of being in the 17% who still keep loosing on finasteride than being the 2% (loud minority) who get sides.

Good question... who can answer this???
My thinning was only noticeable to me prior to starting finasteride, but has got a lot thinning during the first 3 months. Freaking out right now.

Theoretically speaking the answer should be NO...

Hairloss is said to be noticeable when 50% (not sure about the number) of the hair is gone.

Given that then, what is the expectation the lost hair would return?
Been on 1.25mg of Proscar for just over 3 months.

I've been on Finpecia for 52 days now and minoxidil for probably 3.5 months. Since beginning finasteride my crown/vertex and midscalp are the thinnest they've ever been. My frontal area in the middle appears to be thickening up. My temples shed quite a bit during my initial month on foam. It seems the that the finasteride triggered a good shed that affected my crown and mid scalp but it seems to have subsided now. I'm looking forward to see what the next two or three months brings. I really hope that this is the worst of it and things get better from here. One good thing is that I currently have zero sides from the finasteride.

I'm only 40 days or so on finasteride but I see some thinning on my crown/ vertex. I hope this hair that I lost on the crown will grow back even thicker...

Yea, me too. It's kind of tough knowing things are getting worse after I finally decided to start treatment. But I'm just trying to keep a positive mindset right now. I mentally prepared myself by expecting a big shed.

After my 1st shed, I looked pretty much bald... it was so hard on me. Check out my pictures now though! How is that for re-growth? ;)

anyone here who started minoxidil first and then went on to finasteride. I started minoxidil and 7 months later seeing that i was shedding heaps and not much regwroth soi started finasteride.

Its gotten worse over the months I was on minoxidil. Am 6 months in on finasteride and have stopped minoxidil, am shedding fewer hairs (and little thickening), but no big improvement.

did i do the wrong thing by starting with minoxidil first??
