Hey guys, been a little while since I posted any personal questions so here goes

Its been about a years and 4 months since I started finasteride and it has been a long year and 4 months, many heavy sheds and many doubts over if I am doing the right thing or not.

The summer is my worst time of year for shedding and this one has been no different. So I again find my self pondering should I add monoxide or hold off, I could really use some advice from a few indifferent sources.

Please take a look at my webpage and the link to thins month and let me know what you think there is also a link to last year at this time to compare.

Thanx everyone.

I would really wait until the shedding stabilizes or stops before starting minoxidil.

It's hard to grow more hair when your existing hair keeps falling out. minoxidil is sometimes known to cause sheds too. And with a finasteride + minoxidil shed goign on at the same time your hair would be destroyed.

I've only been on finasteride for about a week and I'm starting to see more hair falling out also. :(

well i have been on finasteride for over a year now so i think as far as shedding gose this si how it is going to be. minoxidil may make me shed a little more at first but in the long run and may control it more.

It looks like you have maintained even with all the sheds. Your hair may even be a little better since you started. If you want more than maintenance then you probably should add some minoxidil. I started minoxidil right off and I wish I hadn't only becasue I am curious as to what is doing what.

Seeing as you have all of your hair, what would you hope to gain from minoxidil?

well i have lost a lot of density in the last year i would say 25 to 30 % of my over all density.

And i have noticed that a lot of my hairs are much thinner then they were also where i used to have 2 or 3 hairs per FU now i have one so if there is anything i can do to stop and or reveres this and rethicken some of the hairs up that is really what i wand.

As you can see from my pics in bright light my hair is very easy to see through right down to my scalp and that is a new thing.

So that why i am thinking minoxidil

lol, are you worried about your hair???

LOL, i can actually see the scalp of my 8 year old nephew. does that mean he's balding. fraid not.

you have damn thick hair. nothin to be worried about. if i had hair like that id come here once a year. i appreciate that the situtation may have been worse pre transplant, but now, come off it. your lucky to have so much thick hair. i really dont see where the problem is.

I am comparing what I had to what I have I am also trying to make sure it gets no worse.
I wish my hair loss was in my head but that is not that case.

I am grateful for all comments but really what I am looking for is help deciding weather to add minx or not

I dont know where you are losing your hair.. you know some people just have natural hairlines like yours (I wish I did). I would not go near minoxidil.I guess with finasteride your hair might have got more density..but you did not lose any to begin with..Even with wet hair, your hair looks good..Sometimes I just dont understand what people see..If I wasnt a member of this site for a long time and saw you here before, I would think this was a joke...
I think you should use your time better then to go to a site for which you dont need. I mean this as a complement not in a bad way...

You people are crazy. He is diffuse thinning and he caught it early. I wish I caught it as early as he did because it wouldn't have been such a surprise.

Ill just throw this out to see if anyone disagrees... male pattern baldness causes hairloss, not finasteride or minoxidil. Nobody is going to get the horseshoe because they started putting minoxidil on their head or taking finasteride. There are studies showing that people who took minoxidil or finasteride were better off or maintained (regarding hair counts) after a few years while people who didnt use minoxidil or finasteride had lost hair on average. People with thinning hair will shed anyway, and their hair will thin. Anecdotal stories on this board relate meds to that thinning but rarely do I hear anyone say "I was thinning, I shed with finasteride so I stopped it, and now my hair is thicker than ever." Not to say that sheds dont happen on meds, but just to say it isnt always because of the med.

Personally I never noticed thickening on finasteride, but may have had a decreased rate of thinning. With the addition of minoxidil i think the hair shafts are thickening up a little and the temples are a little better. No harm done anyway. If I stop the minoxidil I believe the worst thing that will happen is that my hair density will revert to the level it would have been if I never took minoxidil (as the studies suggest). As dr. Lee's minoxidil 5% is convenient and easy to apply (with your short hair you could use the sprayer) the only issue is really the cost and the question "is it indicated with that degree of hair loss?" (a personal decision). If you believe it is worth it and indicated I think the studies say "no harm done" and some possible benefit if you start minoxidil. minoxidil and finasteride do have additive effects...

The problem with male pattern baldness is that there is no predicting how far it will progress for you, or how quickly. As current treatments seem better at maintaining than regrowing hair, and as they seem safe, it may be ok to "overtreat" and start treatments "too soon" rather than wait til there is an obvious problem. Whether the cost and inconvenience is worth the possible gain is a personal decision...

It sure looks like your hairline is solid and there! Really, your hair is looking good and THICK! The finasteride appears to be doing very good things for you.

I am not that worried about my hair line, the rest of my head is thinning and that is what is worrying me.

Im kinda in the same boat

I've been using Propecia for 5 years and 8 months, and have maintained what I started with. I was thinking about adding minoxidil also. I also have diffuse thinning, worse than what you have now, but still decent.

For one, dont know how long propecia will be effective--could be a lot longer--but I dont know. No studies after 5 years that I've seen.
Two, I would like to see if I can regrow some hair.

If you are willing to put on minoxidil 2x a day, I dont see why you wouldnt add it. It's a proven treatment, and if you stick with it, it could help. I wouldnt worry too much about sheds--I mean, if it works for you it will help in the long run, which is what you're after.

So I was thinking of Dr. Lee's stuff, Xandrox, because of the addition of azelaic acid (DHT inhibitor) to the 5% minoxidil solution. I am also thinking of Lasercomb, cause I have inflammation of the scalp and because I think I could help diffuse thinners. Not to mention I dont enjoy taking the time to put liquids on my head (although I am willing now, to keep fighting hairloss).

i am in the same boat as you and some of the others who have replied - 27 years old, diffuse thinner, still with lots of hair, but getting thinner. i've been on finasteride since 2001, but added dr. lee's minoxidil about 5 months ago after realizing that my hair was starting to look thinner.

My hair is real short (buzzed) so its effortless for me to put on the minoxidil and it dries in minutes. I wish I could tell you that the minoxidil has turned things around, but its really hard for me to say whether it has worked yet because i've kept my hair buzzed (to a #2) since i started.

I also added generic dutasteride a few weeks ago ( i still take 1/4 proscar a day) sort of as an experiment. With finasteride and now minoxidil, maybe they have worked, but i still shed a lot of hair each day. i guess i am just curious to see if dutasteride will have any effect on shedding, its hard to say with minoxidil, but i think its possible that it has cut it down a little. one thing i have definitely noticed while on minoxidil is that i shed a larger percentage of thin hairs. not sure if this is good or bad.
