Yeah I guess. Its hard to see a doctor when I am at work all day. Also my hair loss is not that noticeable and not a big family history of it so doctors seem to brush it off. What do you say is the reason for a doctors visit to get a prescription for proscar for hairloss? I want to see the doctor about losing hair?

Honestly I wouldnt go see a regular doctor. I would go see one that specializes in hair loss..or go see a hair transplant Doctor.

I guess though if you HAVE to go to a regular doctor then yeah i would just tell them its about hair loss...he may want to refer you to a hair loss specialist or something. If the regular Doctor is willing to give you propecia, explain to him that it is very expensive and cost is an issue for you and that many people take Proscar and split it up instead, as it is the same drug just cheaper.

I mean i just cant imagine that itd be THAT hard to get, but then again I live in a major city with doctors who do this kind of thing all the time. Id imagine in a small town a doctor might never encounter someone asking for Proscar.

Yeah well the thing is my hair loss is not that bad and not much of a family history so usually they say you have no hair loss do not worry about it kind of thing. So in 5 years when I come back with a lot less hair they will just admit they were wrong I guess?

Been a while since someone posted in this thread. I explained to my Dr. exactly what i wanted to do. She wrote me a prescription for Finasteride in 5mg doses and i would take a 1/4 tablet per day. I got 100 tablets of Generic finasteride from Target Pharmacy for $30!!!!

Thats great but the big problem is no real doctor is going to prescribe proscar to some 25 year old kid for off label use of hair loss. I asked my dermatologist and he said he could lose his license and liability for prescribing me proscar instead of propecia.

Your doctor is wrong! Physicians can legally prescribe any medication that they see fit for off label purposes. They do it all the time! Find a new Doctor, and you won't have a problem.

It's true that doctors can legally prescribe drugs for any off-label purpose they see fit, but that doesn't mean they are less likely to get SUED, if they do something like that! I don't think the dermatologist mentioned above would ever "lose his license" for it, but I _do_ think it's possible that his insurance company might well cancel his insurance policy! It's too easy for such a doctor not to take such chances, and simply say: "Sorry, I can't prescribe you Proscar for hair loss. You'll have to use Propecia, instead."

I have never taken a prescription drug for life. When a doctor prescribes you propecia and you run out of it after 3 months or whatever do you need to make another office visit to get a new prescription? Can you just call him and get the prescription renewed since your going to be using it for the next 30 years?

A doctor can prescribe a certain number or refills for you (either in person at your appointment, or over the phone afterwards) which will last a certain maximum length of time for you on the drug, and I believe that maximum length of time is either 1 year, or 6 months. Check with your doctor, just to be sure about it.

I think the major reason Dr's were reluctant to prescribe Finasteride in the past is because people (me included) were using thier Medical insurance to purchase the drug and not using it how it was intended (5MG is for BPH).

Now that you don't need to involve your insurance company since it's so cheap I think Dr's would feel a bit easier about prescribing it.

I have had a script for finasteride for years and been paying $20 for 90/5MG pills ( ~ 1 years supply) and the first Dr I asked denied me for the reason I stated above.

No Dr is losing his license for prescribing a drug like Finasteride, we're not talking a class 2 or 3 drug here like Percocet or Vicodin.

I was hoping someone could suggest a pill cutter. Since the 5mg tablet has to be cut into 1/4's, would a pill cutter such as this work? Appreciate the help.

After your year of prescriptions runs out do you have to go see the doctor again or can you just call and get a new prescription for it?

Anyone noticing any side effects or hair growth after switching from inhouse? I was a loyal inhouse customer for 12 months with no results and switched to Walmart generic finasteride recently. I don't want to make any accusations at this point, but after a few weeks thought the hair looked better and it still seems to be improving so hopefully not placebo effect. Perhaps I am just one of those rare delayed finasteride responders but it makes one wonder...

Also, no other treatment changes were made around that time and the improvements are all areas other than front whereas all my other treatments are focused on front, so I'm thinking this has to be the finasteride.

Inhouse probably does sell fakes. I ordered from them but it hasn't arrived yet. I plan on just going to the doctors and asking him to prescribe me generic finasteride just to be safe. Keep us updated Rabid.

This is good news. So now the prescription will cost much more than the pills. $60 for a prescription, if it is issued. Some doctors won't issue it. But there is the piece of mind of knowing your pills are real.

I wonder if walmart will tell me which doctors prescribe it the most so I can go to that one.

Can Dr Lee give me a prescription?

Propecia - 30 Day Supply
#831 Propecia - 30 Day Supply
Regrowth, LLC does not dispense Propecia nor provide prescriptions for 5 mg finasteride tablets. According to the California Medical Board and the California Board of Pharmacy, a physician cannot dispense or prescribe oral finasteride to any patient who has not been personally seen by the medical practitioner within the prior six months.

That is just California though.

+1 What FinFighter said. I just tried a surgical scalpel and that worked insanely well, just make sure the pieces dont go flying everywhere. I guess the pill cutter i got was a pos.

No, Canada does not yet have this generics program at Walmart yet. However, they do carry generic 1MG Finasteride for fairly cheap, so its still not that bad for us. (around $40 per month)

They do carry the generic 5MG finasteride for approximately $2/pill, which works out to about $180/year for treatment at 1/4 a pill (1.25MG finasteride). Costco is the best bet at $25 per 30 pills, which works out to less than $100 a year.

If you are able to get a prescription for 5MG finasteride, going to costco is by far your best bet.
