17, should I start taking action?

Just turned 17 and got a haircut a few days ago, and it appeared that the hair at my temples has receded. My father is completely bald (started balding in his early/mid twenties, he's 37 now), so I'm pretty worried. Should I be?

It looks fine to me, better than mine at least and my dad is only a Norwood 3 in his late 50s. Probably best to keep an eye on it or if it's really getting to you that much fork out some cash and see an expert.

receding at 17 means youll be slick bald by 25....try nizoral and wait until you're 20 for finasteride

Pay close attention to the temples. Looks like they are receding a bit. I suggest using a 1% ketoconazole for now. You still have a good head of hair so try to stay away from any of the shampoos with sulfates. The ketoconazole shampoo I have has natural ingredients like emu oil, caffeine and saw palmetto extract. They help stimulate the scalp. Good luck, man!

Maybe maturing normal for a high schooler at the most.

Really??? The kid is 17, his hairline should not be maturing at that age! I get you not recommending finasteride at his age, but you don't recommend minoxidil either? Just because you are trying to convince yourself that people look better bald, most don't, and you know you realize this. At the very least I would give minoxidil a try, no need to sabotage the kid and recommend garbage and snake oil that you yourself know will not work.

My recession is about he same as his. Except I am 23. I have some diffuse thinning on the sides so it makes the recession look slightly worse. I think it is matured tbh. He will probably have to deal with a receding hairline by the time he is in college. On minoxidl: minoxidil is not a permanent solution. I wouldn't take that until 20 also. Can cause some nasty sides as well.

I started to lose my hair around the same age as you, I was 22 when all this started for me. In hind sight I wish I would have done something sooner. You are right minoxidil is not a permanent solution, no treatments are at the moment, but it can work wonders for some. When it comes to hair loss, time is not your friend. At his age I would not recommend finasteride, but I don't see the issue with giving minoxidil a try. Even if he is able to just keep his hair line where it is until there is something better available, it would be considered a success.

I might almost agree with Baylife on this one.
I'm 18 and most guys I knew from age 16+ kind of had these temples.
I wouldn't start meds yet, but keep a very close eye on it to look for progression. If it gets worse, start meds if you're comfortable. Maybe make a tiny semi permanent mark and see if it goes beyond that?
Minoxodil is fine to start during teens as it doesn't cause any development issues in regards to masculinization and etc.
Finasteride and etc are a different thing, start them if you want, but realize that your development will be affected. Personally I couldn't care less about looking 'adult manly' so I've been taking dutasteride since 17.

I call b.s. :protest:

He needs to use Minoxidil too with the ketoconazole.

17/18 your hairline recedes a little bit.

Raise your eyebrows. Look at the wrinkles. If your hair has receded more than 1/2 inch past the top wrinkle then you might have the start of male pattern baldness recession.
