Hi everyone,

I'm 30 years old and since over 3 months I started noticing uncommon hairloss in the shower.
Every time when I run my hand through my hair in the shower I have 10 hairs in my hand (see picture), and this only starts getting less when I reach around 100 hairs (but can def be more). I know losing between 100 and 200 hairs a day might be normal, but I have never had this before. It also became very dry.
There haven't been any significant changes in my hair & health routines, apart from a organic coconut spray from Urtekram which I've been using since last summer and made my hair look great, although I've stopped using this now. I've experienced stress, but this is not different than any other period in my life.
I didn't notice any changes in my hairline going more back than in my 20s yet and there is no hairloss on my pillow or stuff like that, but that's probably because my lost hair tends to stay between my other hairs as I have very curly dense hair.

I went to a dermatologist and she said it's a "close call" / borderline , and says it's Alopecia Androgenetica. She just went through my hair and prescribed minoxidil. Didn't really have a good feeling about how quick she went through the consultation. I didn't start minoxidil yet as I'm not sure this is really a good solution for me, as I've heard you start losing a lot of hair first and you have to take it your entire life.
My mother's dad started losing is top hair around his 40's, same with her brother.

I also had a huge vitamine D shortage and now started taking a vit D supplement.

I have an appointment with another dermatologist early July, but wanted to hear your opinions.

Thanks

Im really afraid of the sides of finasteride, there was a recent documentary here on national tv about so many victims who went depressed, couldnt have sex anymore..

Some people tell me balding wouldnt be so extreme as what i'm experiencing ?

It's 1% chance that it's vitamin D, but if it is you're very lucky. Give it a shot. If it's androgenetic alopecia, you can choose between suicide and whining on impact section.

Btw I dont see white bulbs at the begining of your hair?

Thanks for the response. I'm just questioning if androgenetic alopecia has hairloss in such excessive amount. I can go 15 times through my hair in the shower with my hand full of hair like on the photo, while most of my friends with androgenetic alopecia it was a slower more unnoticed proces.

What would white bulbs mean?

Well, only thing that I can tell you is that you have similar type of hair loss as I do. Do you lose hair from sides? Do you lose eyebrows?

I believe white bulbs would mean it's androgenetic alopecia. But I'm not an expert so maybe someone more knowledged should back it up.

You can try other stuff like vitamin deficiencies first. I never tried finasteride because I also though its dangerous, and more risky then male pattern baldness itself. If you wont try finasteride IMO your best option is acceptance. You could try minoxidil since its so common and cheap no reason not to.
Without finasteride and sometimes even with it male pattern baldness is still a long term losing battle. IMO If your male its like 98 percent sure you have male pattern baldness if your losing hair. I guess people want to hope its an easily curable thing like vitamin deficiency instead of the monster male pattern baldness that is incurable.

Here's an update:

Went to a second dermatologist for her opinion, she did a biopsy on my scalp.
Meanwhile I also went to the general practitioner , who prescribed Finasteride (1mg).

Yesterday I went back to my dermatologist and the results came back : androgenetic alopecia .
She told me she would never prescribe Finasteride for someone young like me because of the sides and how this medicine is not meant for hairloss , and would recommend not going this route, and told me to just try minoxidil as it could give great results.

I started Finasteride 1mg and Minoxidil 5% combination 1 week ago, and not really sure if I wanna stop finasteride...

you are 30 years old, in 20 years you will be 50 and another 20 after that you will be on deaths doorstep. Ask yourself if you really want to spend the next 20 years (IMO the years that should be most fulfilling and joyous for a man assuming you have a career and life sorted out) as a baldie? My doctor had no problems prescribing me finasteride and said that he had never any complaints about it despite prescribing it to many people and from what I can tell he is a good guy that genuinely cares about his patients. There are sides, like watery semen and slightly reduced sex drive. I believe these are common but they aren't to any extent that has made me question or believe my life has changed in anyway since taking it.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm sorry man, but you're 30 and at a very early stage, like seriously your hair looks better than mine and i'm 17. You'll be bald when you're older than most of us and you can add more time with treatments and that's a good thing if you're really balding. Try to keep what you have and visit a dermatologist to see what's good for your case. And try not to forget to check if it's vitamin D because if you're lucky, it might be the case.

Thanks for all the response so far, I kept continuing finasteride 1mg daily & minoxidil (morning and evening) ,
why would you advise only finasteride and not minoxidil as well?

Do you need a documentary about many bald men couldnt have sex anymore?

Anyway, your hairloss is very slow and finasteride could stop it completely.

I'll answer for him, because your hair loss is very minor and there is no need to minoxidil as you don't really have a lot to regrow.

thanks for the response. I'm still shedding like crazy though, literally doesn't stop in the shower when I go through my hair.. now 2 week ons finasteride and minoxidil
