Anyone Here Start Finasteride in Early 30s?

31 now. Hair has been fairly stable at NW2 for pretty much as long as I can remember; since at least my teens. Hair type is very fine, and always has been.

Up until 6 months ago, I never really considered hair loss, as I don't really have any full baldness in any of my relatives on either side, but I noticed some stray hairs maybe a 1/4-3/8 of an inch below my hairline. At first I shrugged it off as "new" hair development, but I quickly realized that it was thinning/receding in this area, which is the very front middle of my hairline.

I actually like the appearance of the temple recession, but this thinning in the front middle is making it very difficult to style my hair how I would like, as it become glaringly obvious. I still have hair in this area, but it is wispy and thin, interspersed with normal hairs sporadically, so I'm tempted to give Finasteride a whirl and see if it can help.

Not super scared of side effects, as I've previously taken Accutane, which also inhibits 5AR, as I understand it.

My only concern is, I guess from a karmic perspective, in that the hair gods will punish me for taking drastic measures for relatively minor and normal hairloss for my age, leaving me one of the poor sods whose hair loss is greatly accelerated as a result of taking the drug.

Not sure how much it will help as I would guess that I already have fairly low androgen sensitivity (no aggressive balding, minimal body hair), or I have low DHT altogether, although I have been previously tested and both DHT/T came back "normal" for my age range.

Worth a shot? Is there anyone else in a similar boat who went ahead with it?

There are no hair gods. Only your genes decide how you will respond to finasteride. If I were you, I would give finasteride a 6 months try. You don't want to be a NW4 at 41 and think "I wish I had started finasteride at 31".

I started in my late 30's. The decision is ultimately yours, but if I were in your shoes I would start finasteride. There is no way of telling how or if your hair loss will progress. Hopefully you will not be one of those guys that goes slick bald in year or two.

How is it working out for you, if I may ask?
Last time I saw my derm before last month, it was 10 years ago. He was 48.
I saw him again last month. Now he's 58. I was curious how he would look (I know he takes finasteride and encourages his patients to).
He was a NW3 10 years ago. He hasn't lost one strand of hair in ten years.

I started at 32 and stopped after 1 month because I was worried about potential side effects. I have ED and I need to cure that first.

I've just found a lab in my country which does DHT tests. Price for the lab test ~96 USD. It's written on their site that it is recommended for those who suffer from male pattern baldness. I think it is worth the price... Also states that normal values are between: 250-1000 ng/L for men. I took Proscar 1.25 mg/day some 5 years ago. It didn't help me... also I did get slight gynecomastia, which eventually reversed without additional medication or intervention. Will do the test soon, because I'm just curious to see my levels.

I use it in combination with minoxidil. Both have helped me regrow quite a bit. At this point mostly maintaining. I started a thread a while back with pics:

I haven't updated in while but the latest pics are pretty much where I am currently at. Crown is still very thin and overall the hair on the top of my head isn't close to original density, but I did have some improvement. Like I am sure you have heard many times before: "I wish I would have started treatments sooner".

Thanks for all the input, guys.

I'm not really concerned about rapid balding as things have moved really slow over the years. Even the area that I noticed 6 months ago, if I look back to photos 4 years ago, I can see some thinning in this area. Overall density and temples appear unchanged in at least a decade.

I'm pretty sure Accutane already broke me, so this should be a walk in the park.
