Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), androstenedione and testosterone, penetrating into the cells of peripheral sensitive tissues, are transformed into more powerful dihydrotestosterone (DHT) using 5α-reductase (5α-R). Testosterone and DHT can bind to androgen receptors, but the affinity of the receptor for DHT is about 10 times higher than that of testosterone.
