First heavy workout in 2 months next morning handful of hair

Yesterday I did my first workout in about 2 months as I was just taking a break over the christmas period. Its amazing how much strength and tone you lose in such a short period, I felt really weak and looked fat! Anyway this was my first hard workout in 2 months and im very sore today, I did some dead lifts and seated rows etc. I was quite curious to see how my hair would react to this sudden increase in physcial activty, as my hair for the past month has been GREAT, very little to no shedding and reasonably thick. So to my relief, I only found 2 hairs on my pillow this morning, but when i was applying my Rogaine Foam for the day about 20 minutes later, I was applying it to my crown and mid scalp region, I was working it in with my fingers as I normally do and as I pulled my hand away to my shock and dismay there was about 20-30 hairs sticking to my fingers and in my hand! Thats the stuff nightmares are made of! Anyway when I was working out heavily last year, I never had anything happen like this when I applying the foam, so I know for a fact working out does not cause or speed up hairloss, if anything it helps. However there is no doubt in my mind that the yesterdays heavy workout resulted in this bigger than normal shed the next morning, its highly inprobable that its a coincidence, because I monitor this kind of thing very intensly everyday. What could cause this? The sudden influx of Growth Hormorne or Testosterone? Either way its not going to deter me from working out as I know it will stabilize as soon as I get back into my regular routine. But damn! And I dont want anyone trying to tell me its a coincidence or its all in my head either, I am very observant and meticulous when it comes to this kinda stuff :nono:

lifting would not raise your dht levels that high in just one day. and even if it did the dht you produced today would not affect the hair follicle right away. its gradual if anything. its just a coincidence continue to lift hard.

metalheaddude,
are you aware that masturbation greatly raises your testosterone and DHT levels temporarily?

If I were to apply the same logic that raising your androgen levels temporarily will cause immediate hair loss, then masturbating should do the same, right?

Working out does initiate inflammation, and since male pattern baldness is essentially an inflammatory condition...

Hey I dont know what caused it! Thats why im asking you guys for a possible explaination. The circumstances surrounding this sudden shed are VERY suspicious and seems to much of a coincidence for it to happen the morning after a huge workout when I havent worked out for 2 months.

The explanation is you're paranoid.

This is something I have noticed as well after doing a work out for the first time after long periods of inactivity, you're not paranoid. I think you pretty much got it right with mentioning the sudden influx of testosterone in the body. Jolts such as this would certainly have an impact on hair. My hair and skin seem rather oily after working out for the first time over a while, and I always see more hairs come out in the shower. I also get acne very shortly after returning to working out as well on the very next day, which is certainly connected since I have very dry skin and only get 2-4 pimples per month. Such a shame - I used to have a fabulous physique a few years ago when I was body building (which I feel was probably a big part of what got my hair loss going) and am now too scared to attempt it again in fear of accelerating the thinning even further. I am pretty inactive now and luckily I have a pretty speedy metabolism so I haven't gained hardly any fat, but I did lose almost 30 pounds of muscle. I'm still in good shape and can do 50 push ups at any given moment, but I'm just too afraid to go to the gym because of the given topic. These days I try to focus on maintaining/thickening my hair and making my face look as attractive as possible with various cleansers and moisturizers, the results of which unfortunately seem to be a trade off with heavy workouts, at least for me.

Same happens to me on my workout days - the next day I see more hair in the shower and when applying liquid minoxidil. However I WON'T give up bodybuilding for something that is INEVITIBLE. If you stop masturbating, working out, etc, you may temporarily lower test (and DHT) levels but IS IT WORTH IT?? You will only be delaying the inevitable. Carry on living your life and enjoying the things you love - especially if they are beneficial to your health. As long as you combat hairloss with the best tools that currently exist you will have nothing to be ashamed of even if you end up losing the fight....

A good workout always seems to calm me down, I feel my day is imcomplete without a good workout. I only work out during the weekdays though.

Nothing to worry about-- just coincidental. In any case the hair was about to fall out anyway.

Typically, hair spends 2-4 months in the loss phase before falling out. So, when hair falls out is set 2-4 months before it falls out, not the day or week before. There are only two partial exceptions-- the first is cancer chemotherapy, where hair falls out directly from the growth phase. Even here, it takes several weeks. The second is when the length of the loss-phase is shortened by medical treatment, the so-called "shed" caused by follicular activation.

Yes, when you have a shed you tend to think about what did I do wrong, looking back hours, days or weeks. That's what I did, anyway. I'm talking about major shedding here BTW, like 200 hairs overnight. When I learned that it takes 3 months for a hair to go that route, I figured it must have been quitting my heavy dose of antidepressionmeds about 3-4 months before the shedding started.

I still believe weightlifting is a big influence in hairloss, don't get me wrong. It may also shorten the time of the resting phase and kick the hair out sooner. But these hairs were on their way out anyway.

When you workout like that you are stressing the body much more than you even know. There are many things the body will do to cause the hair shed, one of them is to increse the number of ARs (Anabolic Receptors) and yes testosterone will start to climb right way ie as you are working out.

The biggest factor here is when you simply push yourself too hard you are actually putting the whole body in a negative (injured) state. So as with any trama you will see side effects with hair loss included, different people are effected to varying degrees.
