Frontal Hair Thinning After Nizoral For A Few Weeks

Hey Guys,

Started to really try and tackle this hair loss thing head on recently... was using minoxidil loosely for a while. I started applying it correctly and letting it sink in. Added daily Saw Palmetto... not quite ready for a prescription of finasteride yet. I know how some people feel about SP but i want to give it a few months and really see what it might do.

Also added Nizoral... i had the bottle from a year ago. I tried it then but noticed extreme scalp itch the next day, i never had scalp itch so i put the stuff in storage and didnt use it.

After starting my new regime and doing research it seemed like i should jump back on the nizoral so i did. This time i actually had scalp itch before using it. The nizoral seemed to help my scalp itch and my hair felt great.

Ive been using it once every 2-3 daysfor about 3 weeks now. Recently i've really noticed my frontal hairs are getting that dieing wispy look... like theyre on their way out. Hair seems thinner in general in the front. Maybe its natural progression but it really sucks to see it after becoming diligent about hair loss.

Can anyone weigh in on this? Anyone else experience the same thing?

Quick side note... i'm really debating trying spironolactone, wheres a good place to get this at?

I gave nizoral a try on and off a chance for many years, and this time I think I'm done with for good. While my hair looked temporarily thicker with more volume, it made my scalp itch, a different kind of itch than the minoxidil itch.I quit nizoral for a few weeks and I don't get that itching any more.

the 2% Nizoral/Keto makes my scalp very dry and itchy--i dont know if their is something in it from the prescription that i find harsh of if its the strength--i do shed a lot when i use 2%

The 1% keto i have is from Regenepur (think that is name) i like this one i actually find it soothing to my scalp and i don't shed on it the way i do the prescription.

I have this debate on this with my Dr--he really believes in the prescription strength 3x a week..but i spoke to another dermatologist she gave me a list of like 5 shampoos one was nizoral another was T/Gel can't remember the others---she felt its a good idea to switch them up use different shampoos through the week..my appointment with her was so quick--she is an alopecia expert---so i don't know 'why' she wants me to switch them around. I have to find list i will share if you guys want the names of the shampoos--they were all drug store brands.

Im on topical spironolactone blend thats made for women--it also has estrodial and melatonin caffein in it.

Im curious why you would do Saw Palmetto instead of Finn. I keep reading side effects from SP more so than i do Finn--Just going by what i read on here.

My Dr makes a topical for men that has finasteride in it, i think a few places do this now. But topicals are weak i am only trying the one i am on because i had menstrual side effects from oral spironolactone and dont really want to add birth control pills to mix. BUT if this does not work i will go back to oral spironolactone in few months.

I saw a topical spironolactone cream on internet but i dont know if that was a good place or not..

I dont think you should take oral spironolactone unless a woman OR a transgender woman..i could be wrong maybe other people know more about this than me. I am not expert on the oral anti androgens.

Hi Hairblues, sorry i wasnt specific - i was looking for a spironolactone cream. As for side effects its been about 4 weeks on SP - I started off on really low dose about 100mg's every other day and have been very gradually upping it. I am at 125mg every day now. I believe the pills i have are 250mg per pill, I will probably start making it 250mg a day. I have had no side effects at all. My libido is as high as its ever been.

I had a finasteride prescription, i started taking it at 1mg a day. Got the ball pain and sort of hazy feeling, didnt mind the hazy feeling actually kinda liked it. My worry was (and this was possibly a placebo effect because i knew it MIGHT happen) when i got decreased libido and erections.

If SP shows no promising signs after the end of January i will probably start gradually phasing it out while gradually phasing finasteride back in. I believe most of these side effects can be mitigated by very gradually adding and increasing dosages.

Back to the nizoral... i am just not sure about it. My hairs getting wispy in the front might just be a coincidence... but it does scare me a bit.

I shed a lot while doing the 2% and i was told this was good sign..but it never seemed to stop--if this is good/bad or a coincidence i cannot tell.
theoretically they say shedding from any new treatment is good..but if it goes on too long i dont know how good it can be.
I may go back to the 2% regular use--for now i just started the topical spironolactone about 6 weeks ago and this past 2 weeks started minoxidil..i want to see how i do after 3 or 4 months than maybe try the 2% again. For now sticking more with the 1% regenepur..

@David_MPN I'm tagging David because i think he knows more about the saw palmetto good/bad statistics...i 'think' i have seen people say that the science is not really behind it for DHT but i could be wrong.

whatever you decide its just good to have as much information as possible.

i found this the other day I have NO IDEA who they are or where they deliver etc so buyer beware..you may want to try and get it compounded at a pharmacy instead. I think someone mentioned a pharmacy in Pennsylvania that did compounding you have to get a prescription..spironolactone smells supposedly if not compounded properly.

keto shampoo is useless . I used it 2 years ago when i started propecia , and for those with thin hair and sensitive scalp it can be really really bad . I ended up with a red scalp and thining crown, after shedding ton of hair .
It shouldnt be included in the big 3 , way too harsh for the hair . and it doesnt have enough anti androgenic properties . you just leave it 5 minutes on the scalp , this is a total waste of money.

yeah that was the only source i found. Im curious to try it...

i sort of hate coming on these forums... everytime i do i see 20+ different products/approaches people are doing that they claim work or might work and its just soooooo many different options. Makes my head spin. I think its a good idea (although very difficult) to pickup one or two approaches and stick with that and only that for awhile and reassess every month or so. In theory thats a good idea but very hard to practice.

There's a thread that I think @SmoothSailing wrote up on saw palmetto, the evidence is good that it converges t being a weak version of finasteride after long-term use. The evidence is from various clinical trials. We also know from the internet that many men get similar side effects from saw palmetto as others get from finasteride.

For ketoconazole shampoo, I recommend Nizoral 1% a few times a week. I think it's largely that many kinds of shampoos can help, unfortunately most chemicals are poorly researched. But everything from tea tree oil to coal tar might be good as well, as long as it's anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, etc. I expect modest benefits from those kinds of ingredients.

How often are you using it? Maybe try using it less.

Every Wednesday and Saturdays. Never seen dandruff on my comb until I started using Nizoral. It happened pretty quick like I saw pieces of white skin on my comb the next few days. I don't usually have anything on my comb other than hair. ( Never had a huge problem with dandruff either, sometimes a little itching on the scalp tho )

I am also on liquid Minoxidil, but I started a week before nizoral and nothing happened to my scalp immediately with minoxidil.

Yes.
You should use it only once a week. You are over-using it.
It dries the f*** out of the scalp, so you should use a good moisturizing conditioner...
