How Fast Is Fast? Hair Loss For 35+ Guys

I've been monitoring my hair thinning for a few years now. Sometimes it feels like its happening so fast, but I'm not sure it really is. Would like to hear your opinions on my timeline and your personal stories about how quickly you lost your hair after 35.

My timeline in a nutshell:
4 years ago- perfect NW1 full head of very thick hair.
3 years ago- started to see some thinning at the crown but it was only visible when my hair was wet. Hairline still intact.
1 year ago- crown becoming more visible and my once very thick hair had lost a lot of fullness and volume on top. I had to start cutting my hair a little shorter on the sides to make up for the loss of volume all through the top of my head. Still my front hairline hasn't moved!
Now- my crown is really starting to show through even with dry hair, and my hair is noticeably thinner on top (though I started out with extremely thick hair so it still has good coverage).

So I would say over the course of 4 years my hair has changed drastically. Does this seem really fast to anyone else? Or is this a normal timeline for someone my age?

For the record, I'm 40 and was a bit in shock when i realized I was thinning out on top. I thought I would keep my thick hair forever! How naive of me.

For all the shitload baldies like me i've seen going down the drain :

Bottom line is, everyone is different and will bald at a different rate/progression, for some it may halt spontaneously and for others it's a non stop nightmare, some at 15, others at 45 or even 60.

You'll just find approx stats on the subject, but no real correlation, you won't get a true answer pal

I hear you. I know theres no way to tell how quickly my hair loss will happen. I was just wondering if my timeline felt faster than what other guys my age experienced. Or if mine seems pretty typical.

Hi rich. Yeah mine has gone fast since 35. I'm forty now too. I would say mine was thinning for a good while since early thirties. Wasn't so bad or noticeable until 33 or 34. My hairline was going as well as diffuse thinning. I wore hair gel for years so the gel made it look thinner for a long time. I was in denial a bit. After 34/35 it got much more aggressive. People commenting etc. I think with hairloss it's a bit worse than you think all the time. For me anyway. Like there's more gone than you thought. You only see it when you start trying to save it.

I first started losing hair around d 26. Was very slow. First noticed a slight bald spot in back at 31. And was ok till around 40 than I needed hair thickener s. So I was about where u are at 40. To day I am 63 ol fart of the group and I still have some hair with big bald spot in back. With topick I can look ok for.my age I guess. Everyone is different. But I think in 4 years a.lot can happen. I've seen guys go quicker. Would hurt to have a hairloss specialist check it out

Yeah thats what I'm afraid of. For the most part no one else really notices, at least no one has said anything to me yet. But my hair is medium length so I think I'm able to hide it. Pretty soon everyone's going to see what I see!

The problem with waiting and asking if it will stop naturally without treatments is that it can go too far and regrowth will take too long or not be great. It is easier to maintain or grow when there is still some hair than grow on a bald area.

Well I'm not expecting it to ever stop. Just wondering if it will happen gradually enough for me to bald gracefully, or if I'm suddenly going to wake up one day with a bald spot and be really upset I didn't do something about it.
Honestly I do not want to use any medications, so I'm trying to convince myself I'll be ok letting nature take its course.

In my opinion man, you’re 40 now just buzz it short and progressively shorter as you thin. Maybe try Rogaine at some point, but I would not try propecia

I would think losing hair at an older age you would respond better to propecia than someone younger where its more aggressive. Especially if its more crown loss. You might get some back if you tried propecia now. Although I understand someone deciding they dont think its worth the risks. Acceptance is not a wrong choice either.
You could try it and see how much it helps after a year or two. The nice thing about propecia is its a cosmetic issue so your free to drop it anytime you really want.

Hair loss sucks but you're 40 for god sakes - most 40 year olds are balding?
I'm 23 and have been balding since 16, you should count yourself lucky..

That has nothing to do with his situation. It is like saying...oh you are 23 and balding? I was born with no legs. Count yourself lucky...Does that make you care less long-term about balding?

At 31 my crown started balding. I didn't fight it, and it sort of just stayed the same, not really getting worse for about 2 years, but it was a definite bald spot. My hair went in the front seemingly over night. I looked in the mirror one day and there it was. I had never even thought about the front going before that. It completed its circle in the front (around the frontal poof, or whatever you wanna call it.) in 2 months. Just turned 34. I buzz now.

OP. I could have written that exact history.

I wasted time with derms claiming it was all Telogen Effluvium or Thyroid. Maybe small factors but in just over two years my density at the crown and now hairline is decimated.

I made the mistake of starting with minoxidil. Huge shed and never gained ground back. I have added RU, almost 6 months and can’t really tell. Maybe a slight decrease in shedding. Debate Propecia every day but haven’t been willing to convince myself. Considering topical.
