Yo irishdude,

Please review my story. Look at the back of my scalp pic. Did you see similar shedding on your back and sides?

Thanks.

Re: Irishpride86's Story - (22 / Propecia 4 mounth update PICS!)

Ryan,

I had a blood test before I got on propecia with one of my doctors. Im gonna call him up and see if they still have those results. They tested to see if it was anything besides male pattern baldness and it showed nothing. I want to use it to compare what is happening with my blood now on propecia to explain my current thinning situation.

Question: How did you ween off propecia?

Also, are you going to upload pictures for us to see how your hair has changed in since you quit propecia? I know this is asking alot, but are you thinking of cutting it as short as you had it before you quit so you can see the difference really good?

is your hair wet in the first pic?

If not then it looks like there is improvement behind the hairline...

Hm, it really seems that propecia has worsened your situation... is your hair still improving?

I dunno man, I reckon you should wait a bit like you planned, but it is up to you.

The pics of page 9 are really what makes me think you should just wait and see where your hair goes from here. You had good density when you started, it had thinned significantly after 5 months. It is hard to tell from your latest pic because it isn't comparing both at shaved length, but it looks like you are closer to you baseline now that you have stopped.

This:
file.php

Compared to this:
file.php

just doesn't seem right in my opinion.

I'm seeing a similar thing, going on propecia as a preventive, but now I'm thinning madly which I never was before (I only got on to slow down minor temple recession). I mean I know I was destined to bald (my dad was bald early), but I can say undoubtedly it was never going to happen this quickly, propecia has seemingly sped up the process for some reason. It just makes me think maybe getting on it to early, while you still have most your hair and trying to use it as a deterrent for male pattern baldness (especially while you are young, still developing;I'm 21, you're 22).

Maybe only use minoxidil for a while if you insist on going on something, the hairs you lost will still be active and minoxidil should be able to regrow these. finasteride has clearly reacted badly with you I think, I think you should wait the minimum time you were going to and reassess, if it has gotten worse then react, if not leave it.
If it continues to get worse down the track, then throw all these things at it.

In saying all that, I am definitely interested to see if you do go the path of using everything, it will test the waters for what I should do :p Anyways I appreciate your updates, so keep em coming, I really do hope you find what's right for you (although it doesn't look to bad in your latest pic like I said, closer to your baseline than before anyways and I know I would kill to be back at my baseline!)

Oh btw, what is your shedding like atm and what was it like when you were on finasteride? And did you ever mention your family history of balding, not sure if I browsed over it in this thread before.
Cheers man.

Oh also about you applying minoxidil, you want to try to rub it into the scalp as much as possible, not just rubbing it through/into the hair. It needs to get absorbed by the follicles.
You should shave your head back down, makes it heaps easier and you get more use out of the same amount of minoxidil (none is wasted I mean).

Ryan,

Do us and yourself a favor. Take pictures of your scalp wet and dry from the top, front and crown for base line. Take the same photos every 15 days. Also, try to keep your hair in the same style. Its for your own benefit to see what is happening. If you have the same reaction to the propecia again, you will see its effect in this month and probably shed in the first two weeks again. Hopefully the reduced medication will not shock your system this time and keep your hair from going into telogen. Take these photos and repost them. Stick your hair up when wet like you did in your febuary pic. You can see the thickness better when its wet.

Yeah, that would be awesome if you did that. It gets confusing with your hair flat in some pics and straight up in some. Also I heard propecia can be just as powerful at .5 compared to 1. Like blocking 65 percent compared to 70 percent of dht.

If you notice that same itch again all over with the shedding you can try .25 propecia.

Irishpirde, you sound a bit jumpy to me. I thought you would quit everything and stay away from this forum for 3-4 months. You were cursing finasteride like no tomorrow.

Now you're back so soon and want to start finasteride. And not only that, minoxidil too....

Well now that you've made the decision, stick to it for atleast a year. Don't look at your hair on a daily basis for another year (especially cause you're on minoxidil).

Like almost everyone on this forum, you will experience a minoxidil shed (which in my opinion is more dreadful than the finasteride shed). But don't quit within the first few weeks, give it some time.

Good luck

Does'nt matter now. Just make up your mind and be on a regimen for sometime.

If you feel "iwantperfections" advice/regimen better suits you due to your lifestyle and quirks then your welcome to adopt it.

I would like to say, at the risk of repition that what works for someone may not work for you cause each individual is different.

But the most f*ked up thingy about any treatment is, you would'nt know unless you have tried it....

Re: Irishpride86's Story - (22 / Propecia 4 mounth update PICS!)

Sounds good !

Not starting off with minoxidil does not mean you will loose any chance of protecting the hair follicles cause its finasteride that actually does that.

I don't mean to discourage you but if you do experience serious sides with propecia, try lowering the dosage and if it still does not improve then just quit it.

You know its not worth it being stubborn and living like that for the rest of your life if the only way to get rid of the sides is to quit. For e.g Gyno.

But yeah just go for it, cause if you never never go you never never know....

What about the photos? Your photos showed your hair got better after quiting propecia. You also said you hair was all itchy while on propecia and it stopped being itchy after you quit.

if your in my same baot... then why are you waiting? jump on minoxidil as well

minoxidil does not make hair worse acording to some on this board.. also if finasteride had a bad effect on me then that why i downed it to .05

Yeah people say finasteride doesn't make hair worse either, your thread is clearly evidence on the contrary though.
Sorta seems weird to throw in another drug to combat the worsen effects that another drug caused, doesn't seem right to me. Propecia was meant to do the job, maintain what you have, pop the pill and forget but that clearly hasn't happened.

I probably will have to get onto minoxidil now after seemingly being a fair few years off using it, although I really don't want too (I'm joining the Army after Uni and applying minoxidil when you're out bush for 4-5 days isn't really viable).

Yeah I've been taking my finasteride every other day for about a month, I thought the dose might have something to do with it. But I dunno, there isn't a huge difference between .5 - 1mg, makes me think it probably isn't the dose so much as the actual drug that is causing the problems.

Re: Irishpride86's Story - (22 / Propecia 4 mounth update PICS!)

What's up with saying you have only been on finasteride for 3 1/2 max as well? Early posts with pics in the thread said you were about 5-6 months into treatment?

I'd go over this whole thread before you took finasteride again man, on the same page you say Propecia is making your life hell and has completely changed your hair (the baseline pic, and than 5 months after is noticeably thinner yet you say it hasn't been cut). I dunno man, we can only go off the evidence you have given us, and clearly your hair seemed to get worse on Propecia, then better once you got off judging by the pics.

Anyways I shouldn't turn you off what you do actually decide to do. Just make sure you stick with it like you plan to, I'd shave my head and take a bunch of photos than take new pics every month for comparison.
Good luck with it all, sounds like you changed your mind again with minoxidil though, so I wouldn't expect a dramatic improvement/change.

Altough you may be shedding, photos clearly showed that your hair improved when you quit propecia. So take some more pics. I wouldn't go on finasteride again in the near future. Forget about what IWP and Obsidian said.

Hey Irishpride, have read the whole thing! Your story is exactly what happened to me! Aswell my hair looks pretty much the same as yours! When I started finasteride a really bad Shedding started after 3 month on it, and just wouldn't stop I'm pretty shure it was Telogen Effluvium it went on for about 4-5month then got off finasteride after using it for about 8 month, Telogen Effluvium stayed for about another 2 month then I started using topical spironolactone after 2 month the shedding was slowing down, now I still lose more hair than normal but not as much as on finasteride...
All in all it has been a pretty bad year for me I lost about 30-40%of my hair within a year, I'm really not sure if that would have happened this quickly If I never had started meds, but who knows?? :dunno:

So I went back to the doctor at month 3 and she said shedding does not happen on Propecia and that if i shed it was prolly just timing that my hair got worse right when I starting taking it... which is total bullshit.

this sucks because now I wish i did nothing about my hair loss because now its really bad since i went on the meds !!!

Ryan

I dont buy this. Its definently the meds, I mean f*****g hell, how can he lose that much hair in the space of a month. Male pattern baldness or not. The top of his hair was completely thick before meds, his scalp was not visible at all (only slightly), now it is.

A lot of other people have complained about the same thing, even though for some it works, this can't be a coincidence.
