Tom Hanks? Please, he's become a fat bastard with a boy's face. I don't see him playing any masculine roles. Kevin Costner is a stretch. I think if anyone could have played those roles, it would've been Russell Crowe.

I am going to have to go with Axon on this one, he would have been able to do the job, his speeches would have been great.

yeah Liam neeson would have been great as Wallace, but i personally liked Rob Roy better, though im not sure why.

BTW, Randall Wallace (screenwriter for Braveheart) was down in AZ to promote his new book, and one of the theatres down here held a special screening for Braveheart, attended by Wallace. It was pretty cool, actually meeting the screenwriter for Braveheart.

You guys are crazy! No one could have replaced Mel Gibson in Braveheart. He was awesome in that movie and directed it. You gotta give him some love for that. Non-man love that is!

I agree with the posters that Mel Gibson is mostly cast because of his good looks. He really acts like the same person in all his movies - himself.

Its just that he has a great charismatic personality that he can get away with acting like himself and make such great money.

The Patriot sucked, so did Braveheart. They were both standard hollywood trite, very predictable good vs evil, hero vs villian. In real life Im sure the roles were not nearly that well defined, but that would take a creative script and insightfull actors to pull off - much riskier than just throwing actors with big names at a silly, simplistic story.

Im sorry to have to say this but EVERY movie is predictable.......except for those thrillers nobody understands till the last 5 minutes of the movie......and saying that its a good vs evil story.......99% of all movies are that....but then again braveheart and the patriot would be predictable and also very good vs evil seeing as they were movies based upon events that already happened.

Wait a second, who says that Braveheart is based on fact? Sure, most of the big battles were based on history, but there is NO indication that William Wallace was such an honorable and wise man; Ive met the screenwriter as i said, and heard him speak. he didnt write bravheart for historical accuracy, he basically romanticized the Scot's battle for freedom. Not that theres anything wrong with that, but it is not a historically accurate movie by any means.

And the patriot? dont even go there. That predictable, melodramatic piece of trash makes Braveheart look sophisticated in comparison.

Historically accurate these days apparently means throwing in a few historical events and making up a predictable revenge story.

EDIT: sorry if that sounded hostile, i was just having some fun.

I'll agree with you in that 99% of movies are predictable but that doesn't mean they have to be simplistic as well. I mean they make the King of England so damn evil in that movie it's ridiculous. The line in it where he and the aristocrats are sitting around acting pompous and he says "The problem with Scotland is it's full of Scots" was just plain retarded. Not only that but there's the horse-crap hypocritical speech in it where Wallace talks about how he, the man, doesn't match up to the legend. I guess Mel Gibson wanted to have his cake and eat it too by giving the appearance of fallibility and humanity, while at the same time Wallace is inhumanly noble and kills about a gillion people in battle.

Also, if you want a good unpredictable movie you should check out the early Coen brothers movie Blood Simple.

The Bounty and Hamlet plus all the other movies he has done shows he has range and is a good actor. Stop hating on Mel, after all he has entertained each and every one of us for many, many hours spread out over dozens of films throughout the years, which is something all good actors have in commen.

i know....i didnt say it was fact......show me where i stated it was fact....i said it was based on true events.....there was a scottish fight that gained their freedom..but we wouldnt want to see that movie cause it would have been boring to the eye.....you need to spice things up thats why they dont do actually true stories...they do based upon true stories..............it would be to boring.
If you want to see a unpredictable movie try..Memento,Usual suspects,Vanilla sky,The Game, or even Donnie Darko..but then again like i said before..the ONLY unpredictable movies are thrillers....braveheart was an action film...those are for visual pleasure ..not for you to think about.

Yeah, I've seen all those movies. I just mean if you want to see a good unpredictable one that most people aren't aware of. Also, you have me on Hamlet, I'll admit he was surprisingly good in that but I didn't think too much of him in The Bounty.
